We had fabulous food and a wonderful server - our first time at Roy's and loved it. We were a little skeptical as this was a chain restaurant - but this is not your average chain. Pricey but we ate well and had excellent service. Make reservations.

Roy's is not what it used to be. My two favorite dishes black cod and the tuna have been changed to cheaper and less flavorful version's of what they once were. When asked by a manager how our meals were, we responded that this was the worst meal we ever experienced at Roy's. The manager responded that he was going to do something special for us to make up for the poor performance thus far. We paid our bill a short time later having not received anything. Do not promise something and not deliver. Roy's has transformed itself into a red lobster with slightly better decor and ambiance.

What's not to like about Roy's? Chicago has many outstanding restaurants, perhaps more than any other city in the country, and we have dined at nearly all of them at one time or other. But we have spent more time at Roy's than any other restaurant, even the ones that have more stars attached to them. And with good reason. The Hawaiian restaurant franchise makes you wanting to come back time and time again. Every time we go there, the place across the street from Holy Name Cathedral on Chicago's north State Street is filled with enthusiastic diners. The bar scene is hopping and the tables are humming. So we keep going and I keep writing reviews for Tripadvisor. My wife and I love to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries there because the staff is so accommodating and friendly and the food is so delicious and unique, from appetizers to souffles. On our most recent trip, to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary, we were greeted by the usual framed "Happy Anniversary" message on our table. And the chocolate souffles came with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate on the serving trey. You feel like family because every member of the staff greets you with "Happy Anniversary" and knows your first names. And don't forget the obligatory photograph. Hey, is this fun or not? Of course, it wouldn't be as much fun if the food wasn't to die for. We love the Canoe appetizer for two--pork belly dim sum, vegetable spring roll, szechuan ribs, spicy tuna roll, shrimp and kim chee. I chose a special, Alaskan Halibut, while my wife favored an old standby, roasted macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi. On other occasions, I enjoyed Roy's Trio--grilled Atlantic salmon, roasted macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi and Misoyaki Butterfish. There are so many other tasty choices, including seared sea scallops, Thai style chicken, braised short ribs of beef, spicy seafood hot pot of lobster, mussels, clams, shrimp, noodles and go chu jang broth. There are many desserts but we always choose the souffles. When it's all over, the thing that stands out about our dining experience at Roy's always is the fact that you don't get the same feeling anywhere else. It's one of a kind -- and we haven't been to Hawaii since 1976.

We have known the Roys name from our trips to Maui and were delighted to find one in Chicago. The service (Ask for one of Nicks tables) was superb and the food excellent-- salad, mahi-mahi and pineapple upside down cake. A great evening

Roy's is one restaurant that is a must each time I visit Chicago. The food is amazing and the staff is always on top of things. I can pass up dessert at most restaurants but I usually make an enjoyable envying when at Roy's. No need to rush the moment in time. Very enjoyable evening when at Roy's'. The one in Hawaii did not leave me disappointed either.
