“High quality food & superior service in a great location.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

Café Spiaggia and its adjacent more formal sister restaurant Spiaggia are located on the Mag Mile. The cuisine in both restaurants is Italian and prepared under the direction of highly acclaimed master chef Tony Mantuano. The Café is divided into two dining areas that are well appointed and very comfortable.

On a recent Sunday evening our party of three arrived shortly before our reservation time and were immediately seated in a nicely located booth. We then sampled the table bread, Parmesan crisps, and the Italian olive oil. The bread was of the soft variety that paired very well with the olive oil that I found to be exceptionally flavorsome. The Parmesan crisps were somewhat unique and appealing.

We then shared a small plate of the Burrata (burrata cheese, eggplant and peppers) and an order of the Tagliatelle ai funghi (tagliagtelle pasta, cremini and porchini mushrooms, Bolognese sauce, peas, and Parmesan cheese). Both were very well prepared with fresh ingredients and delicious, but the Tagliatelle was superb. The Bolognese sauce, which was vegetarian, was extremely tasty and the pasta was very flavorful and cooked to perfection.

For our entrées we had the Salmone (salmon, Tuscan beans, fennel, artichokes, and fingerling potatoes), the Porchetta (pork shoulder, rapinini, peppers, and shallots on a bed of polenta), and the Pollo (chicken breast, ramps, hazelnuts, romesco sauce on a bed of polenta). Again, all the dishes were very well made with fresh ingredients and extremely delectable. The salmon and the pork shoulder were outstanding and the chicken was excellent.

For dessert we shared the Gelati (a selection of three flavors of gelato out of a choice of seven) and the Tartelleta (a chocolate tart with meringue and banana gelato). Both were really good and we devoured them in a flash.

The service was topnotch – professional and attentive but not intrusive.

Café Spiaggia is located in the most attractive section of the city. The food is of the highest quality that is served in a relaxed setting with superior service. Prices are a bit high but considering all that it offers, this restaurant is definitely worth the cost. Café Spiaggia is strongly recommended, especially for special occasions.

“Just lovely but be prepared”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

In our tourism book, Spiaggia Cafe was billed as a less pricey version of its mama, Spiaggia, but as yummy and very worth the visit. Service from beginning to end was wonderful - genuine kindness and knowledge of dishes and drinks. What we were taken aback by was the pricing of their artisanal beers - an 11.2 oz offering for $16.00 was the least expensive, the most was a 25.4 oz choice for $52.00. Our beer drinking companion appreciated a glass of wine instead and was not unhappy, simply disappointed and unrelenting in his denial to pay so much for even a higher end hops beverage. Pricing of dishes is not unreasonable as choices are varied and delightful, and everything was fresh and much enjoyed. We will return.

“Wonderful Italian Food on the Magnificent Mile”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

This is the more casual, but still very attractive, relative of the more formal restaurant next door located on the second floor of an attractive high rise building on Michigan Ave and Oak Street, at the north end of the Magnificent Mile.
The menu is limited, and frequently changes, but still covers all the bases. All the offerings are excellent. Cocktails are good and the wines, all Italian, are good pours by the glass. While I don't have any expertise in Italian wines I liked what I drank and found it reasonably priced.
The service is better than excellent. The decor, which I don't think has changed in the 10 years or so that i have been a patron, remarkably still looks very modern and attractive and better than many brand new restaurants.
The gelato was sublime.
A couple can enjoy an evening of good food and great service surrounded by a casual yet elegant modern atmosphere at a reasonable cost.

Excellent food. Service was good, but not great. The go-to dish here is the Wild Boar Bolognese. Very flavorful!!
