Guess what Chicago? Food doesn't have to taste like preservatives and packaging!
We never found the restaurant we were actually looking for because we were distracted by the look, the welcome, the aroma, the ambience, and the outstanding cuisine at Local Root. The name conveys the philosophy, but having experienced the farm-to-table philosophy at many other restaurants with varying degrees of success, that did not influence our choice. The place smells like great food, and your nose will tell you everything you need to know.
We wandered in for brunch and experienced ingredients enhanced only by judicious technique - not heavy-handed technique designed to cover for poor quality ingredients, but the feather-light artisanal touch designed to show off what really fresh eggs, garden-fresh seasonal veggies, local cheese and equisitely brewed coffee should taste like. The staff also conveyed a heart-felt friendliness as though we were neighbors which enriched the experience.
In a world in which ingredients are increasingly selected to survive shipping, it's nice to be reminded of ingredients that are meant to taste good. Experience that thrill at Local Root.
