Guess what Chicago? Food doesn't have to taste like preservatives and packaging!
We never found the restaurant we were actually looking for because we were distracted by the look, the welcome, the aroma, the ambience, and the outstanding cuisine at Local Root. The name conveys the philosophy, but having experienced the farm-to-table philosophy at many other restaurants with varying degrees of success, that did not influence our choice. The place smells like great food, and your nose will tell you everything you need to know.
We wandered in for brunch and experienced ingredients enhanced only by judicious technique - not heavy-handed technique designed to cover for poor quality ingredients, but the feather-light artisanal touch designed to show off what really fresh eggs, garden-fresh seasonal veggies, local cheese and equisitely brewed coffee should taste like. The staff also conveyed a heart-felt friendliness as though we were neighbors which enriched the experience.
In a world in which ingredients are increasingly selected to survive shipping, it's nice to be reminded of ingredients that are meant to taste good. Experience that thrill at Local Root.

“Outstanding - Overall Amazing Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2012

My wife and I took a trip to Chicago for her birthday and stayed in the Streeterville area. We ate brunch on her birthday at Local Root, having heard that the food was delicious from another friend. We are both "foodies" and enjoy cooking and eating out, and both enjoy all kinds of cuisine. I am a huge fan of breakfast food in particular, and have eaten brunches at restaurants all over the US, Canada, and Europe. I have never in my life eaten brunch this delicious. We tried the Eggs Benedict with Ham, Eggs Benedict w/ Pulled Pork, and the Lamb Sausage with Goat Cheese Scramble. The bread was all made in house, as was the jam and ketchup, all of which were simply delicious. The brunch cocktails were also outstanding, with the Espresso Martini standing out. The service was outstanding, the decor and general ambience were relaxing, and the staff were all friendly and cheerful. The prices were also easy on the pocketbook - a nice surprise and relief from the usual downtown Chicago food prices. We liked our experience so much that we ate there again on our way out of town the next day. The crew's commitment to quality shines through in every aspect of the restaurant. Our only regret would be not having an opportunity to try the Lunch and Dinner menus, but, we'll be back, as soon as we possibly can! If you find yourself in the Chicago area, I strongly encourage a stop at Local Root. I give it my highest recommendation!
