We took a 4-day trip to Chicago as a group of 8, including one child and three seniors. We booked three non-smoking rooms through Expedia, one room with a king bed and 2 rooms with 2 double-beds. The double bed rooms they gave us were both smoking rooms and the smell of smoke was very strong. We were told that they had not "guaranteed" the non-smoking room but considered it a "special request" that they had no obligation to honor, and the staff did not even try to see if there was something they could do. We pleaded and begged, because we had two people with bronchial hypersensitivity who could absolutely not tolerate being in a smoker room, to no avail. We had to switch people around, which led to awkward and uncomfortable sleeping arrangements for everyone. We were stuck there because we had prepaid for the rooms, over a hundred dollars per room and night. The fact that the hotel did not honor our request pretty much ruined our trip. We all woke up with sore throats and red eyes every morning (and I am not a sensitive person). The carpets were so soaked in smoke that every time my son walked barefoot in the room his feet were black and had to be washed. Gross! We stopped by at the front desk at least twice every day and were told every time there were no other rooms, which was a lie - on the third day I met a family at breakfast who had gotten a non-smoking room the previous day without a reservation. Needless to say, I was furious! Staff blamed it all on Expedia. I have booked many, many trips through Expedia, but this had never happened to us. Had we gotten the rooms we reserved, the hotel would have been acceptable, but not great: Gym is small and equipment old and poorly maintained, breakfast very basic (donuts, bagels, yogurt, bad coffee, orange juice - no milk, no butter, no toast), front desk staff clearly overwhelmed with re-stocking the breakfast bar. You have to eat in your smoky room. Towels for the third person in the room had to be requested every day. The location was okay because the walk to the rail station was only 2 blocks, but it takes quite a while to get to the museums and downtown by train. The rooms and bathrooms were okay, but the fact that we had smoker rooms ruined them for us. Unless you are a smoker or want to feel like a smoker, do not stay here.
