“Great Hotel - Good Price Value in Chicago”
Reviewed August 11, 2007

For inner city Chicago this Expedia special price was very good. The rooms are VERY small and cramped with the TV/Bar literally 10" away from the bed. The wired internet service is tremendous though. The hotel is running low prices because it is in a major construction area. Each morning the workers right outside my window started at 6AM and WOW what a racket they make. The manager's nightly reception is easily the worst I have witnessed in Chicago. I asked for a refrigerator and microwave which was added to my room at no cost. The fridge is barely large enough to hold a small bottle of milk at one setting - FREEZE! Try pouring frozen milk on your breakfast cereal in the morning. The hotel is conveniently located though and I may stay here again depending upon the prices of other local hotels. In my opinion, Amalfi will need to keep their prices lower than $150 per night to maintain a steady client base.

Stayed here for three nights. Hotel is halfway between boutique and business hotel. It is in North River, a 5-minute walk from N. Michigan Ave. Rooms were nicely decorated and clean. I did not find the free buffet breakfast that great as the choice was rather limited (no healthy options, only muffins and other pastries). The happy hour is a great idea but the room it is held in is very small and crowded.

My family and I recently travelled to Chicago for a 4 day stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. The location is excellent. We were able to walk to the shopping at Magnificent Mile and the Navy Pier. In addition we walked to the theatre district to see Wicked. The hotel is so close to the above sites if you are tired and choose to take a cab, the fare is only about $5.

The room size was comfortable and clean. Continental breakfast every morning was adequate and managers reception with wine and cheese in the evening was a nice touch.

The hotel is right next door to Keefers Steakhouse which was very good. Also across the street is Harey Careys which was also a fun restaurant. Numerous eateries are within walking distance.

I highly recommend Amalfi's on your next trip to Chicago.

My wife and I traveled to Chicago on the 4th of July to the 7th of July. We picked the Amalfi for the price [plane and hotel]. When checking in I found out that the hotel upgraded us to a suite for my birthday. What a nice surprise. The room was huge and the bed was the best we have ever slept in. The shower with two shower heads was just super. Cont. breakfast in a.m. and drinks in p.m. added to the stay. location was great, it took us two days to figure that out. We will try to visit Chicago again and would not hesitate to stay at this fantastic hotel. I rate it 5 stars. george and maureen, plainville ct.

We had an excellent stay at the Amalfi Hotel in Chicago. The location was a big plus, as it was in River North, just above the Theatre District and the Loop. Both were within walking distance, so that we only had to use a cab twice the whole five days. We walked to the Taste of Chicago, and took the free trolley around the Loop and to the Navy Pier and the Field Museum.

The hotel was spotlessly clean, and every single person we met was helpful and cheerful. Our luggage was lost by our airline, and though we checked in at 11:30 at night, we were quickly given toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant!

Our 6th floor room faced Kinzie St., and it was at the end of the hall (612) so our location was quiet and had a nice view of the city skyline. There was not much construction going on in the museum building going up across the street, and the Trump Tower going up in the next block, so we were never inconvenienced. We enjoyed the quiet and we loved the contemporary decor.

Nice touches: incredibly well-stocked honor bar, books, magazines, CDs and nice clock radio (tuned to a jazz station.) My husband had ordered champagne and candles for our anniversary (which we spent chasing our luggage and arriving in Chicago 8 hours later than we had planned) and they were waiting for us...but the ice had melted and the candles had burned out. But it would have been really cool if our plans had worked out. Thanks to the hotel staff for taking care of that for us!

It was great that there were very few children in the hotel...and the few we saw were teenagers. The continental breakfast was good, though not filling. We were able to get coffee (which was quite good) and fruit before heading out on foot to get a real breakfast.

The white wine at the "cocktail party" was bad, though. And it is really weird to go into this room with Muzak playing and strangers standing in line only talking to the person they came with. (And one couple brought their child.) To make this a party, one really needed a social director kind of person to get people to mix. Everyone got their drinks and went back to their rooms. Weird. We only tried this once. After that, we went to a real bar.

My only complaint was that at 9 p.m. we had to call and inquire where our laundry was, after we had been told it would be delivered to our room by 7 p.m. And the laundry service was incredibly expensive. If we had known that at first, we would have just bought more clothes to wear instead of cleaning the ones we had used. (Luckily, our luggage arrived before we left Chicago.)

Whenever we have occasion to visit Chicago again, we will be staying at the Amalfi. Highly recommended. They took good care of us.

I stayed here in May of 2007 to attend a conference.
It's a 3-star hotel but a little better furnished. It's a good small boutique hotel and a good alternative to a larger chain hotel.

Pros:
Free breakfast (continental)
Free Wifi
Business Center
Comfortable bed and bed linens.
Very Clean
Aveda bath products.
Good location
Good Pricing

Cons:
Towels are OK.
Noise of construction.
Sometimes slow and pokey wifi.

Notables:
Happy Hour is an odd experience. It's held in a conference room of some sort and it's like walking into a room of strangers. Only went once, not my kind of scene. Preferred spending time at Bin 36 up the street, better atmosphere.

Our room was on the 5th floor towards the back, I was awaken each morning with the sound of trash trucks. No matter, had to get up anyway for conference.

After researching thoroughly (Tripadvisor, Gayot, etc.) we decided the Amalfi rated a try for our first visit to Chicago. We had a wonderful stay, enjoying our room and the general atmosphere, which approximated a small European Hotel.

Pro: Attactive, good-sized room with very comfortable bed and functional/ tastefully contemporary furnishings and accessories; large bathroom with nice little vanity area, including separate makeup mirror and bench; CD's in room, and all the quality amenities one needs. Very quiet setting, no loud/drunken conventioners, sports fans, etc.; obliging staff with good attitude (even brought a microwave to our room so my wife could make popcorn, at no charge). Spotless carpeting, etc. -- well cared for facility. Included continental breakfast and happy hours are nice quality and plentiful in quantity and choice. Within 5 - 15 minute walk of museums, river tours, excellent restaurants, live theater and jazz club.

Con: Only first 6 stories of building are hotel, so no amazing views (we stayed in room 615 and got a pretty decent partial city view. No complaints, just be aware that a top floor view is not like one you'll get in some of the more pricey Michigan Ave. hotels. The happy hour lounge is rather cramped and noisy, so take your drinks to your room; no protein for breakfast, so pick up some yogurt if you need it (plenty of room in the minibar fridge.

Unless you must have the "extras" of a big hotel (room service, restaurant, bar, etc.), or be right on Michigan Avenue, the Amalfi represents an excellent choice at a very moderate price. Expect to pay $75-100/night for anything equal in the Loop/Magnificent Mile area
