“Wow, what a find!”
Reviewed January 21, 2008

Wow, what a find. A clean hotel, with friendly staff, modern décor, in a good location for walking the ‘Magnificent Mile’ etc. (It's a safe city) Opposite is an excellent Steak and chop house called ‘Harry Carry’s’, plus many other nearby restaurants.

For a very reasonable price and you get a modern spacious room, DVD player/TV (free loan of DVD’s from foyer), free continental breakfast on each floor which you can eat in your room, two PC’s in Business Centre with free Internet and a free newspaper. Best of all, each evening between 5.30-7.00pm there is a reception for guests with free cocktails, or wine, or beer – plus snacks. (Yes free beer, no limits!)

My only complaint is that the Rooms (like many hotel rooms) have minimal lighting making them pretty dingy at night. Don't be fooled by the Hotel name, their appears to be nothing Italian about this hotel, if that's what you expect.

Although probably not a five star hotel as such (I'd say a very good four) I give it five stars for the price!

If only all Hotels were like this, Tripadvisor would not be required!

I based our reservations on the positive reviews on this site. The location is really terrific. Close to everything. (Nordstroms Off the Rack is only a few blocks away!)

The hotel lobby was filthy. Actually, it was the chairs in the lobby that were very badly stained/soiled. I wouldn't sit down during check in, it was too gross. While we were there they mentioned that they were currently renovating the upper floors of the hotel...hopefully the lobby would be next.

The staff were very helpful and service oriented.

We had a great room. We had no external noise disturbing us BUT the heating system (which we could not turn off) had stuff pinging in the machinery so it felt like we were sleeping under an airplane hanger. They had great "products" Aveda.

The breakfast was a nice touch...but the quality of the baked goods was very poor. We couldn't eat it. So, the fruit, coffee and juice were it for us.

The high rating for others surprises me. Its moderately priced hotel because it's a very average hotel.

My cousin and I are 24 years old and we stayed at the Amalfi in Chicago. Its got a great location we walked to Magnificent mile and cab fair was cheap to some great nightlife. The room was very clean. The shower was great. Plenty of vanity space. Breakfast buffet was awesome. The complimentary cocktail hour was filled with yummy apps and strong drinks. The fitness center was good for a quick workout. They have a couple computers so you can check yuor email. The bar Harry Carrys across the street was great fro watching the game. The staff was very nice and helpful.

try these restaurants-

Wave
Nine Steakhouse
Rock Bottom bar- excellent pub food
Giordanos Pizza- Yummy cheese stuffed pizza

  • Liked — Complimentary buffet and cocktail hour.
  • Disliked — Staff a little confusing at times.

I had a wonderful stay at the Amalfi while I was in Chicago. It was over the Thanksgiving holiday and the hotel was a treat. The staff was helpful with any questions and booking of reservations that I needed. I even needed to extend my stay a night while there and the front desk made sure I kept my wonderfully low rate!
The morning buffet and afternoon drinks were awesome. Considering that they are complimentary, and part of the room price, they were more than expected. (loved the artichoke hearts-yum) Just make sure you wake up early enough to grab the goodies in the morning!
The rooms were also quiet, even with me being right by the elevator, and the beds were great. The bathrooms were great too with more than enough room. I even loved the Aveda products (the shower gel was nice and refreshing!)
It is a quick walk to anywhere you want to go, or a short cab ride/rail ride.
One word of caution, if you are looking for a hotel that is completely full service with a restaurant/bar inside the hotel that is open at all hours, this isn't the hotel for you. But, who really needs that in Chicago?

Review's a little late, but...
My husband & I first stayed at the Amalfi in 8/06 totally based on reviews I read on this website. We were totally WOWED!! Loved the location, the room, the Aveda bath products, but most of all loved the evening reception & breakfast on our floor.
I returned to Chicago with 3 girlfriends in 9/07 and booked us in a suite at the Amalfi. It was great - room was very spacious and my girlfriends were quite pleased! Will stay next time I'm in Chicago too!! P.S. They honor a government rate!!!!

Enjoyed this Hotel immensely, possibly the best and most accomodating staff of any Hotel we have stayed at recently.
Checked in for New Years Eve for 2 nights, we were given a corner room , nice size comfortable but a bit noisy from some outside fans. Contacted the front desk and they responded immediately , personally came to our room to show us another availability and moved us to a beautiful suite overlooking Harry Carey's. Everyone went out of the way to make our stay comfortable and arrange dining and theatre tickets. They work closley with Harry Carey's and walked in without a reservation at 7:00 PM New years eve, gave them a card from the Hotel and we were seated immediately. Tuan the bellman, Joe, Chris and George at the front desk were wonderful.

The evening cocktail party had great food and beverage selection, the morning continental breakfast on each floor had great selection as well

We were very impressed with the hotel. Easy check-in, the hotel is very clean and quiet. The rooms are clean, and the king bed was fabulous. The bathroom is spacious, and we loved the double headed shower. The managers special was great, and we loved the snacks. We were able to skip dinner. The hotel is a short distance away from the theater district. It was a 15 minute walk to the Cadillac Palace Theatre. The House of Blues is about one block. Harry Carey's restaurant is right across the street from the hotel. The restaurant is expensive but I have never had a better steak. The bar is a fun place to hang out and unwind after you see a show. We loved the free continental breakfast located on each floor of the hotel. The turn down service was a nice touch to come back to. We will definitely book this hotel again. It was a good value compared to the other outrageously priced hotels in the area.

  • Liked — Reasonably priced, the manager's special, and the free breakfast
