Review's a little late, but...
My husband & I first stayed at the Amalfi in 8/06 totally based on reviews I read on this website. We were totally WOWED!! Loved the location, the room, the Aveda bath products, but most of all loved the evening reception & breakfast on our floor.
I returned to Chicago with 3 girlfriends in 9/07 and booked us in a suite at the Amalfi. It was great - room was very spacious and my girlfriends were quite pleased! Will stay next time I'm in Chicago too!! P.S. They honor a government rate!!!!

Enjoyed this Hotel immensely, possibly the best and most accomodating staff of any Hotel we have stayed at recently.
Checked in for New Years Eve for 2 nights, we were given a corner room , nice size comfortable but a bit noisy from some outside fans. Contacted the front desk and they responded immediately , personally came to our room to show us another availability and moved us to a beautiful suite overlooking Harry Carey's. Everyone went out of the way to make our stay comfortable and arrange dining and theatre tickets. They work closley with Harry Carey's and walked in without a reservation at 7:00 PM New years eve, gave them a card from the Hotel and we were seated immediately. Tuan the bellman, Joe, Chris and George at the front desk were wonderful.

The evening cocktail party had great food and beverage selection, the morning continental breakfast on each floor had great selection as well

We were very impressed with the hotel. Easy check-in, the hotel is very clean and quiet. The rooms are clean, and the king bed was fabulous. The bathroom is spacious, and we loved the double headed shower. The managers special was great, and we loved the snacks. We were able to skip dinner. The hotel is a short distance away from the theater district. It was a 15 minute walk to the Cadillac Palace Theatre. The House of Blues is about one block. Harry Carey's restaurant is right across the street from the hotel. The restaurant is expensive but I have never had a better steak. The bar is a fun place to hang out and unwind after you see a show. We loved the free continental breakfast located on each floor of the hotel. The turn down service was a nice touch to come back to. We will definitely book this hotel again. It was a good value compared to the other outrageously priced hotels in the area.

First trip to Chicago, wanted a nice place downtown. The Amalfi was just that!

Location: Just a block north of the river, a few more blocks to lots more like Michigan Ave, Millenium Park, Lake Michigan. I don't mind walking, so the couple of blocks walk from the Clark train station to the hotel was not bad at all. If the weather is bad, a cab ride would be short and cheap.. much cheaper than a cab ride all the way from O'Hare! The train, FYI, was $2 one way.. great deal! Views from the rooms won't be too special, as the rooms only go up to the 6th floor and taller buildings are all around. Oh well, get out and walk! Right across the street is Harry Caray's steakhouse.. I had a very tasty dinner here and really enjoyed the whole place.. totally busy, hour wait, but our waiter was completely on top of things.

Condition: They keep a nice hotel! Lobby is a good first impression of the hotel, as it's fairly small but quite swanky. Rooms were the same. Everything was kept up well, minus the ceiling in the bathroom looking kinda rough.

Service: Everyone I encountered, from door man to bartender to cleaning staff were quite pleasant and helpful. Nice to see!

Perks: The evening reception was EXCELLENT! Very decent selection of comp drinks, including some well drinks, wine, beer, and sodas. Plus, they had a nice spread of meats, cheeses, breads, olives and the such.. and plenty of it. Seating was limited to a few couches and probably 8 tables w/ 2 or 4 chairs. Easily packed, but both nights I was there I was able to find a table within a couple minutes of getting to the room.

The breakfast provided was also great! I believe it's available 630 to 930am and is set up on each floor. They provide a very nice selection of coffee, tea, juices in bottles and baked goods like donuts, danishes, breads and more. Baskets and plates are provided, so you can load up all the goodies you want and carry it easily back to your room. For the price of FREE?! Wow! Thanks Amalfi!

I would recommend this hotel to my closest friends and family without hesitation, and hope to stay again soon myself!

Read the other 5-star reviews from recent months, I can't think of anything to add! I did not go to the evening receptions so I cannot comment on those, but all the positive comments about staff, room comfort and amenities, and breakfast buffet were confirmed during my two nights there.

(One question, though -- considering all the food and beverage they give away each morning, why charge for the bottled water in the room? Is it that special??)

I was told the Amalfi was the most unique boutique hotel in the city - and it is. Just got home and can't wait to go back! The residential look and feel begins at the front door and carries through the entire experience. Soft colors and luxury linens, extra bathroom features like a lighted mirror and vanity stool, multi-head shower, arched shower rod, etc. Great pillows and a robe you don't want to take off. Lots of in-room extras make you feel 'spoiled.' The manager's reception is not only incredible because the food is outstanding and premium bar is complimentary, but it offered a unique opportunity to network with staff and other guests. "We love to store luggage!" was the glowing response from Melissa when we asked to store bags between check out and our train departing. Walked to Michigan and State shopping areas within minutes. Definitely the right choice for a central location with exceptional service.
