Tracy Letts versus Amy Morton: TIED

Wow, what a fresh take on reviving the 50-year-old classic.
Edward Albee must be so proud.
Good luck in New York!

“Good People, Great Play, Great Theater”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

There is not a bad seat in this intimate house. When you have an excellent play we so enjoy staying for the discussion session while the traffic lets out. I look for opportunities to go to Steppenwolf

“Sex with Strangers in a Virtual World”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

This play has been showing at the Wharf Theatre in Hickson Road, Sydney during October 2012, and what a very good play it is too. Two people (Olivia & Ethan) find themselves thrown together at a holiday retreat during a blistering snowstorm and pass the time engaging in a discussion of literature and sex. The play makes much of the transformation from old technologies to the new digital age. No better illustration of what is so dysfunctional about new technologies is captured repeatedly when the male lead (Ethan) constantly reaches for his mobile phone, no matter what other activities are competing for his attention. Of course there are other pointers to the contrast between old and new technologies such as Olivia's love of the smell of old books. But when Olivia 'smells' a new ipad/kindle she exclaims that she is smelling "the future". Initially, Olivia appears to be very insecure. She cannot face any criticism of her written work. By the second act the roles between herself and Ethan have been reversed and it is Ethan who is lacking confidence and who leans on Olivia for encouragement. This is a good play which operates on several levels. It has depth and range and the two lead actors are excellent.

“Incredible performance, cutting-edge theatre”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Excellent performances, and talented performers. The Steppenwolf has a geat Young Adult program and chooses interesting new shows for its adult season. Give yourself time to climb the stairs if you're on the upper theatre. The staff is great at pointing everyone where they need to go, quickly and efficiently.

Parking was easy. There's a garage next to the theatre and it's $10 if you're seeing a show. I was disappointed that there was almost no open restaurants around the theatre on a Sarturday afternoon aroudn 2 pm.
