“Nice Rooms - but be ready to be nickle and dimed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

My wife had a conference at this hotel and so we took the opportunity to "staycation". Nice hotel, but everything was an add-on. For the price of this hotel, to have to pay $12.95/day/computer for ANY internet access is unconscionable (and don't tell me it's industry standard when I can go to a red roof in and get it for free). I wouldn't be this hard if they at least provided free wi-fi in the lobby - but no, not here!

Breakfast was expensive. A second rate buffet offering for the "reasonable" price of $18.95. Don't bother with ala carte because when you add coffee to virtually ANY entree, you'll approach or exceed the $18.95. Most ironically, the ala carte entrees were obtained by the staff by going up to the buffet and taking them off of the stations...so much for paying extra for fresh!

Finally, I had tickets to the Cubs game. Needed a way to print them out. I was offered the business center for $5.95 for computer access and $1/page to print out the tickets. Even the concierge, wouldn't help.

If this is how they treat members of their loyalty club, good luck to anyone else.

While the property is nice, I wouldn't stay here again. There are hotels out there who actually want my business.

I first stayed here in late 2008, on a continuing work assignment (arrive Sunday night, check out Saturday morning) for seven weeks. Since then, I stay here four weekends a year for committee meetings with a professional association across the street from the hotel. Every stay is a delight.

The staff is extremely attentive: reception, dining room staff, engineering, bell staff are all friendly and welcoming. During my prolonged stay, the dining room staff noted that I liked to read while I ate, and always put me in a well-lit part of the dining room, even if it was closed. The bell staff, who also drive the airport shuttles, were wonderful about taking me to restaurants in the area and picking me up when I called them.

The rooms are lovely, with a comfortable sitting room and a huge bathroom, and lots of storage space, and the lobby also has many places to relax and read. While there's not a formal gift shop, they do have a little grab 'n' go just off the reception area that is always stocked with sandwiches, salads, drinks, and snacks.

The restaurant, Fresh, has a great menu, and the breakfast buffet is generous. For prolonged stays, the menu gets a little boring, but the reception desk keeps menus for more than a dozen restaurants that will deliver to your room, so it's easy to add a little variety.

The downside is the location. The hotel is located in a suburban office park, and there's nothing at all in easy walking distance (the hotel is right off the expressway, and there are no sidewalks). There's a transit stop close by, but in the winter, it's a cold wait for a train into Chicago. (Here's where the front desk's menu collection or the willingness of the bellmen to give you a lift to a local restaurant comes in handy.) It's difficult to get to church on Sundays, for example, unless you take the hotel shuttle to O'Hare, attend services at the airport chapel, and catch the shuttle back to the hotel afterward.

The only possible problem in the suites themselves is the tile flooring in the bathrooms. If so much as a drop of water is on the floor, and your bare feet touch the floor, you're almost guaranteed to slip and fall. I've learned to keep a pair of flip-flops next to the shower so that I can step into them immediately, and have had no problems since.

Overall, this is a great hotel for a long-term stay or a short visit, with a wonderful welcoming staff and attention to guest comforts. The location leaves a lot to be desired, but it's possible to work around it, and the many positive features make up for that one inconvenience.

Renaissance Hotels typically have very good rooms, high quality service, and excellent amenities.

The Chicago O'Hare Renaissance was able to deliver only partway in achieving the level of quality expected.

The rooms were good sized and well appointed room (able handle four adults comfortably) on the two doubles and pull out sofa. The hotel was modern and nice designed. The pool was clean and a good size for swimming and the amenities (bar etc.) were all well laid out and enjoyable.

However, the air handling in the hotel rooms was horrible. It was not possible to set a specific temperature and have the system work automatically. There was a switch for adjusting the temperature but it had no markings, just cold and hot. After a certain time in the evening, the air handling blowers cut out even though the room was warming up. The room became quite stale and almost impossible to sleep. It appears they reduce the air flow after a certain hour to save money, but this made sleeping quite difficult. The only way to fix it was to keep dropping the temperature so it was freezing.

Second, the hotel advertises a free shuttle to the airport, but it only runs on the half hours and when we went out to meet the shuttle right around 5:00am, it had already left and another was not going to run until 5:30am. There were three parties waiting and nothing was done by the staff on duty other that to say another shuttle would be coming at 5:30. We ended up calling a cab (20 bucks) that took us quickly to the airport.

Overall, I expected more out of the hotel, especially a Renaissance.

They probably don't deserve a "poor" rating, but the hotel didn't live up to expectations. First they hit you with a $24 per day parking fee and then the internet is $12.95 a day. The place itself, the suite, and the staff were nice. The bar is ok as is the shuttle service to O'Hara. (My wait at the shuttle pick up area was ~20 minutes and it seemed like other hotels circulated more regularly.) My room looked west and had had a lot of traffic noise coming off of the Kennedy expressway. Jet noise was not a problem. Again, I'm not sure if these complaints warrant a poor, but I'm certainly in no rush to stay there again.

I stayed here the night before I had to fly out of O'Hare airport. The Renaissance has a complimentary shuttle to the airport that runs 24/7 every 30 minutes. Very convenient. The hotel itself is worth the name Renaissance. Clearly the flagship of the Marriott brand. The rooms are big for an airport hotel and you can even get a good deal right around $100 at times.

On a recent business trip to Chicago, I decided to continue with my recent patronage of the Marriott chain, having been very pleased with two of their hotels over the past few months. Renaissance O'Hare was an excellent choice and my stay there renewed my enthusiasm for the brand.

A 15 minute shuttle ride away from O'Hare (Terminal 5), hotel reception staff were attentive, friendly and efficient, exactly what you need after a trans-Atlantic flight. The hotel had an air of activity (there was a wedding reception on that evening) but never felt crowded. My 9th floor room was wonderfully acquitted with a reception / work area, bedroom and a luxurious en-suite with one of the best wet room / rain forest showers I've seen in this price range.

The proximity of the hotel to the Cumberland Blue-line CTA stop (5 minute walk across a dedicated foot-bridge) made accessing the heart of the city effortless, even with jetlag. The immediate surroundings of the hotel's neighbourhood were modern, well-lit and secure, making a late-night return stress-free.

One definite perk of the Marriott family are the easy-access fitness facilities. In this instance, a 7am swim the next morning in an empty but warm pool did wonders to clear travel weariness. Add to this the Starbucks in the lobby (not to everyone's taste but one of my preferred breakfast choices when travelling) and an easy-to-use business centre for printing, and you are left with an extremely well thought out and appointed airport hotel!

This hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. They treated us very well. We had a corner suite which had a tremendous amount of space. I knew about being charged for parking before I arrived so I expected it. We really didn't mind. The location is so close to the Blue Line Cumberland station that we took the train for 2 days to go where we needed to go.
