Excellent pies and fantastic chips (fries)

The steak and ale pie was full of flavor and the pastry was crispy.

Only thing that I had a read of an issue with was the kale with the special (bangers and mash). I think someone over-salted it. But the mash more than made up for it.

“Off the beaten path, a great choice!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Excellent savory pies! Crispy pastry heaven! A great little neighborhood alternative to dining in the city. I took the El and a bus, and walked less then 5 minutes, no problem. It certainly is a little "hole in the wall", and has limited seating, but even on a Sunday evening there was a steady stream of customers, many locals known to the staff, who had obviously been many times! A steak and ale pie, mashed potatoes, minted peas, and their own ginger soda came to $15 + tip.

Do yourself a favor, make the 20 minute trip from the loop (probably less in a cab) and support a local neighborhood joint, with quite a following it seems!

“Yes, You Really Do Need a Savoury Pie”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Food: 5+ bubbles. Location/ambiance: 2 bubbles

First, don't let the shabby exterior scare you. The kitchen is in full view from the counter and is orderly and spotless.

Second, understand that there is more than one way to enjoy The Pleasand House's savoury pies. Dine in and BYOB. Order to go and take it next door at Maria's where they'll happily mix you a drink and let you eat there. Takeaway and reheat at home (they travel very well). If you're in a hurry takeaway and eat on the go because they're as portable as a hamburger or burrito.

Third, recognize that the steak and ale pie is the standout here but that does not mean you should ignore the chicken curry and mushroom kale options. Each has a unique flavor and personality all its own that will draw you back to Pleasant House again and again.

Fourth, repeat.

“You will return”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

I first encountered the Pleasant House through the food truck selling their pies last year. I loved their steak and ale pie so much I immediately went back and had the chicken balti pie. I looked them up online and saw they also had fish and chips on the menu. On a rainy Friday evening we made our way to the bakery. We got there around 5:30pm and it immediately began to fill up. It's a very small place, about 10 tables, which go real fast. The outside is very nondescript and they obviously haven't spent much on decor. The good news is that what it lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in taste and service.

The fish and chips were some of the best I have had in the city. You get a good size piece of hot, flaky fish and some seriously crispy chips. What makes the entire meal is the meyer lemon tartar sauce. It adds a light citrus crispness to it all. Ask for extra.

I have only had two of their pies, the steak and ale, and the chicken balti, and both are spectacular. The crust is flaky and so buttery. Because it holds heavy filling, it is thicker than you would expect and is a bit difficult to cut through but it does not affect the taste. You can expect to savor every bite. I plan on returning to try their other flavors.

Get there early or much later to avoid the rush or get it to go. It does get busy after work and the tables fill up quickly. Don't expect to get in and out in 20 mins as your fish and chips aren't waiting for you under a warming lamp. A great gem on the south side.

“Pleasant English Food”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

The pies are delicious. We had steak and ale pie that were so tasty I may not order the other pies. Not true I will go back and go down the menu list each time and order a new pie. The potatoes were fantastic. The honey tart was a little too sweet for me. With a 20% tip the bill was $29.00.very limited seating. However, you can go next store to Maria's and have a beer from a wide selection.
