“The Portage - good food”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

We went to The Portage the first night we arrived in Chicago. The food was excellent. We started with an appetizer of bacon wrapped figs. Delicious! I had the chicken which was such a large portion that I had to box part of it. My husband had seared scallops which he said were excellent. They have a large wine list, but we did not have any. The last bit of food we had was the best crème brulee I've tasted. The waiter was attentive enough to take care of our needs, but not so intrusive as to disrupt our meal. I'll go back. I would recommend others try it.

“Lovely patio”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

The food is good and the patio is fun! The inside is a bit cramped but if the patio is open, you should ask to sit there.

“Exceptional food!”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

Well worth the long wait for a table on a Friday night, because the food and service are so good!! Very small restaurant with a crowded bar area to wait for our table. Bar seats were very comfortable, though. My only complaint would be someone from the kitchen staff that kept running past our table at night to take things out to the trash....we were in a back room near the back door. Not sure why the guy had to run, but it ended up being comical for us. Our server was awesome...very knowledgable on the food and had great suggestions. Not a large menu...maybe only 20 things on the whole menu! But the salmon I ordered that was a special for the night, I would eat daily! Yum.

“Great food.”

We love coming here with friends, or just the two of us. The food is delicious. Out of the way, but that is OK with us.

“A neighborhood gem!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

5.0 star rating

This place is a true hidden gem. We tend to eat in downtown Chicago quite often, though living NW of the city, it gets sometimes troublesome. We always hoped for a place that had the quality of food and service of some places downtown, but a lot closer and more convenient. The Portage is it!

The space is quaint, and there is even an outdoor patio, which we cannot wait to try when the weather turns warmer.

We started with the bacon wrapped dates, which were amazing. Salty, savory, with a little sweet all in one bite. There was a snails appetizer special that was also incredible (if they do tarragon button on anything else, get it!). Both fish entrees (scallops and trout) were perfectly cooked with well balanced sides. Service was attentive, but certainly not overbearing or too stuffy. Nice wine and beer selection, too.

The owner took the time to see how everything went, and he also mentioned that The Portage does wine dinners and will expand into beer dinners. We look forward to trying that, too.

We will surely be back and often.
