Description: Roka Akor is the second location a highly regarded Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar, ranked among Bon Appetit magazine's top 10 sushi restaurants in the country in 2009. Meats, fish and vegetables are grilled over oak charcoal on a robata-style grill. Sit at the sushi bar to chat with the chefs as the slice and assemble sashimi platters and maki with fish that's flown in daily. Besides sizzling steaks and contemporary sushi served the dining room, a bar area features shochu and sake cocktails.

Let me just start off by saying that the Roka Akor in Scottsdale is much better. That was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The one in Chicago is certainly not bad, but there is some room for improvement. Let's start with the good: the service is attentive and friendly, the atmosphere is great, and most of our dishes were great (specifically the grilled pork belly, tuna tataki, and the wagyu/kimchi dumplings). However, some of the other dishes were not nearly as enjoyable. The sushi was good but didn't wow us, and what disappointed me most of all was the wild mushroom rice hot pot. When we had that in Scottsdale, it was absolutely to die for, but here in Chicago it was just okay. This place is expensive as well, but if you order the right things, I can assure you that it will be a good meal.

Went here recently with a group of friends. The waiter was great and super helpful in guiding us towards how to order for a group. We ordered a bunch of items. I almost feel like we tried one of everything on the menu and maybe we did based on our bill. Service was excellent and food was quite tasty but when the bill came we were a bit taken aback. Since a few of us were not keeping a close eye on the pricing of items while ordering, seeing the total bill came as a bit of a shock. The food and service was quite good but be ready to pay for it. The portions are not that large so the bill adds up quick.

The first thing our waitress told us as we looked at the menu was that the food was "family style" and enough to share. Having recently been to another "family style" restaurant we were expecting something similar. Based on what our waitress told us, my friend and I ordered the scallops, mushrooms and sweet potatoes planning to split it all. We received TWO scallops, six small mushroom caps and a few slices of sweet potato. Granted, what we had was wonderfully delicious but the entire portion was not enough for one person, let alone two! For the amount of food received, the price was very high. If you're not really hungry and you don't mind splurging, it's a nice place to enjoy a drink and a sushi roll.

good food. very modern, upbeat type of location. fresh food. just make sure to ask the prices of "specials." we ordered the lobster app special and it turned out to be $60. The staff was not upfront about this. Their drinks are very good. Staff good. modern, clean look. check it out
