“return visit to the Windy City”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

My wife and I travelled to Chicago last summer and had such a great time we decided to return once again this summer. The room rate at the 5 star hotel we stayed at last year increased dramatically so we decided to give the Peninsula a try. We were able to take advantage of their third night free promotion which made the average nightly rate quite reasonable for a five star hotel. We booked through whatahotel.com which provided us with additional free perks such as an upgrade, free continental breakfast and food and beverage credit (thanks Maria).

Overall the stay was wonderful. The room was a nice size with lots of windows in both the sitting area and bedroom. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but the food quality was very good.

As others have mentioned, the technology in the room was quite unique. I especially liked knowing the outside temperature and humidity before leaving the room.

Since we had a suite, we were able to take advantage of the Mini Cooper car service during the day which we used to drive around and see various residential neighborhoods as well as take us to the baseball game at Wrigley Field. We also used the evening car service to take us to dinner at restaurants in the neighborhood.

We walked around the spa but did not use any of its services. We did however sit on the outside deck which is located just outside of the pool area. It was a nice and relaxing way to end the day of shopping and sightseeing.

What sets this hotel apart from others in its category is the service. The employees we encountered were always friendly and polite and the staff who cleaned our room went above and beyond (whether it be folding clothes that were left out, tying phone charger cords in a pretty knot or leaving bookmarks in books/magazines that were left open).

The only downside worth mentioning was the sound of ambulance/emergency vehicle sirens at all times including during the night and early morning. While our room was located on a lower floor, I am not sure if this problem would have been rectified if we were located on a higher floor.

That being said, if we return to Chicago in the future, the Peninsula would definitely be one of our top choices.

The hotel is on the magnificent mile (entrance on the road running of the mile) and is 20 stories high. It overlooks the Water Tower and looks up at the Hancock centre (two minutes walk away) - so a great location

The hotel is lovely, and the rooms spacious and well equipped - there is also free wifi that is so strong i could pick it up sat in a cafe across the road

The staff are very welcoming and friendly and particular praise goes to Gary on the concierge desk - he was more than happy to talk us through routes to walk / places to go and showed a genuine interest in the places tourist are interested in, all his recommendations on a number of matters (which architectural cruise; which towers to go up; which museums / routes to walk were best) were all excellent

Back to the hotel:
- bar: dark and enclosed, but a great escape from the hubbub of the city
- Lobby restaurant: great breakfast, highly recommend the eggs benedict
- Shanghai Chinese restaurant: we had an average experience here meal wise, but in hind sight i think we went for the wrong options - the dim sum appears to be the main reason to go here (and is highly raved about). You can also have a drink on the shanghai terrace, and the "bottled" cocktails are great

Its not cheap - but you get what you pay for - an excellent hotel in a great location

PS Ask for a room overlooking the Water Tower

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Water Tower

Dear Riddler1,

Thank you for choosing The Peninsula Chicago during your recent stay and for sharing your gracious review. We are pleased to have provided you with a positive service experience and made you feel at home with the accommodations. We will be sure to let Gary from our Concierge Desk know that he did an outstanding job assisting you. While Shanghai Terrace does provide great dim sum, our additional restaurant on the street level, Pierrot Gourmet, provides guests with European café selections. We appreciate your enthusiasm to return and look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

We've never stayed at a hotel before that was this expensive or where the service was so fantastic. It reminds me of the movies with the English butlers, though with an Asian flavor. We were there for a wedding, and the hotel did a superb job. Very nice and comfy rooms, great food, and the service during the wedding dinner was impeccable. The exercise room takes up an entire floor and has a fantastic view. The location is also superb, close to shopping, restaurants and the lake. The only flaw is that they are not setup as perfectly as one might wish for handicap access (for my parents) - the bathroom is fine, but the bed was too high to get into easily. They brought a cot in at 11PM (great service!) but this was too low. Aside from this, everyone had a memorable time.

The service was awesome and the room was terrific.
The location was in the middle of the city Perfect for getting to all the shops and tourist sights.
Their breakfast was very well served and the food was great.
A little pricey but well worth it ; it was our 40th anniversary and they send up to our room
a bottle of champagne and some chocolate covered strawberries.

In a city with many luxury hotels the Peninsula is in a class by itself by repeatedly demonstrating its continuing regard for the guest, its most important reason for being. One example would be the casual mention of a birthday while enjoying an aperitif in its woody and welcoming bar. Thus, also accompanying the drinks came a tasty mini-dessert with a lighted candle. The wide and welcoming public spaces - far superior to most other luxury hotels in Chicago - are decorated in subtle but distinct near-East colors and styles. One of only 3 Peninsula branded hotels in the United States, the property is ideally sited steps from the Magnificent Mile and Rush Street with its numerous restaurants and night life. Guest rooms offer every imaginable comfort and a few delights not anticipated, such as the built-in bath TV with separate tub controls, or the very large HD tv that graciously swivels bedside, or the various mood-light positions or, well, one could go on and on. Alright, here's one more: North facing rooms have truly exceptional views of the 1869 Water Tower, reputedly the only structure to survive the Great Chicago Fire, and, just behind, the tapering and magnificent John Hancock Center soaring above for 100 floors. In a city of superlatives, the Pen ranks with the best anywhere in the world.

Room Tip: Best views - Water Tower and Hancock Building - are in north facing rooms.

We treated ourselves to an Executive Suite for three nights as it was the first days of our honeymoon. The suite was excellent. Very spacious, light and comfortable. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. The spa and pool area are very peaceful with very few other people around. The gym is well appointed and you can always get on the machine that you want. The location is excellent for exploring the city. It's by far the best hotel we've ever stayed in and we hope to explore more of the Peninsula hotels in the future.
