I've stayed at Embassies in many locations, with mixed results. Likewise, I've stayed in a number of downtown Chicago hotels, including this Embassy, also with mixed results. This stay was definitely an improvement over all the others at this property.

If you're experienced with Embassies, you know you'll get an up-and-coming crowd with a lot of diversity. Most people are looking for a good value and the Embassy has the best breakfast bargain in the Hilton portfolio - complimentary; and cooked to order. It also has an evening "Manager's Reception" for guests - also complimentary. In the past, this property has had more of a "cattle call" feeling at both the evening reception and at breakfast. However, they have updated the lobby areas and their staff's uniforms, giving the place a more subtle cosmopolitan feel. The warm wood contrasting with just enough clean stainless and dark gray slate tile and plentiful windows make the entire lobby floor very inviting.

The rooms likewise have been updated. Note that the ride up to the room is not friendly if you're afraid of heights. The elevator is fast and open, showing you a bit much while traveling. (Never waited more than a couple of minutes for one - kudos!!) The walkways to the rooms are narrow and face a floor-to-ceiling open space - nerve wrecking for parents with small children I might think. The rooms though, are typical of Embassy. Ours was clean and we were in a nice corner so it was quiet (Room 1514 I believe). The bathrooms are still nothing to write home about, though the Crabtree & Evelyn amenities are a nice touch. But the shower heads have been updated and boy are they nice. They are big heads that throw a smooth stream that somehow felt as if the maker had perfected the water droplet size so the water is easy to adjust but always felt just right. I am an engineer and notice things like that. Hope it's helpful.

Service was competent as usual, though the ground floor staff could have been more helpful. You enter this location generally from the South (Illinois St - one way East) and turn left into like an alley. The valet takes your vehicle from there and then a bellman instructs you to the check-in floor. We were told the wrong direction to the elevators. The same thing happened to another couple I noticed as they arrived - I was leaving. The poor woman might never have found her husband (who had already been instructed to go to the check-in floor above, before she even really exited the car) had I not told her where he was. The bellman wasn't paying attention. Anyway, other than this faux pas, again, the service was competent.

A couple of travel notes: From the I-90/94 expressway, take Ohio Street exit and stay on it until you get to FAIRBANKS. Take a right (south) on Fairbanks. It turns into Columbus right on the North side of the hotel. This would always throw me off as I'm looking for Columbus off of Ohio (I don't like GPS.). Another note. You can't drive from the expressway to the hotel on Illinois Street, but you can walk back towards Michigan Ave. on Illinois Street. Just a block West of the hotel, there is a set of stairs up to the upper street level and you can then get to points West and South.

Short story, the Embassy is a good value for the downtown Chicago buck, especially if you are traveling with a small group.

Room Tip: Rooms in the corners far from the elevators (I think the room #s are xx13, 14, or 15)

Stayed for one night last week while attending a conference at the downtown Hyatt Regency.
I am a state government employee and the Embassy state govt. rate was slightly less than the Hyatt and of course included their complimentary breakfast and cocktail hour. The restaurant was never crowded for breakfast and as normal for Embassy Suites, the breakfast was great!

I have stayed at this property before and the rooms are always clean, the beds comfortable and the front desk is always helpful and nice.

In my past stays I have eaten dinner at PJ Clarkes restaurant which was located on the ground level of their building although it was closed this time. The front desk suggested a good restaurant named D4 right around the corner that offered a great bar for me to sit at and have dinner.

Across the street from this Embassy is a grocery store (Domenick's) which has a deli and a Starbucks.

I will stay here again the next time I am in downtown Chicago for business or pleasure.

We stayed at this hotel in this past weekend (Friday & Saturday night) in the midst of a very busy Chicago shopping season. My rate was $103 per night. The location is great, easy walk to Michigan Ave, State St and Navy Pier. Used the self park option $36/day (reasonable for Chicago), very easy to leave & come back... just remember to check into the garage office prior to leaving the first time. Since it is so close to Lake Dr it was very easy to drive over to some of the museums. (If driving isn't your thing, easily accessible to the bus & metro). The rooms were great for the price, we had a king suite which easily fit our family of four with the pull out couch, having a refrigerator & microwave always a plus when travelling with kids. The pool was also a plus but small... typical for a city hotel. It was big enough to give the kids their "swimming fix". The staff were excellent; rooms very clean. The breakfast was fantastic; we ended up eating a large free breakfast each morning and the entire family did not need to eat again until dinner... huge savings when you think about the cost of going out to eat in Chicago. Unless you are an early riser, this does get busy if you want the "made to order" option but there are plenty of quicker choices with the self serve (pancakes, french toast, eggs, hash browns, bacon and sausage/ along with cereal, oatmeal, donuts, bagels, yogurt & fruit). We were not looking for gourmet so this fit our needs just fine. My only complaint is that the walls were pretty thin... I awoke each morning to a little one next door crying at 0530; fortunately it did not last long. Also if families/ kids annoy you; this may not be the right choice b/c this is clearly a family friendly place. Last comment is that the elevators get very busy in the mornings (Saturday morning two of the four elevators were down which made getting downstairs slow.) Overall, a great time for the cost.

The hotel was a great value for the money. Rooms were large and comfortable. Location is also excellent - very short walk to Michigan Ave. Breakfast was also good but if you want the "cooked to order" breakfast, be prepared to wait in line a long time. Also, if you want alcohol during the Manger's reception, be prepared to wait a long time also. The snacks provided at the Manager's reception are not all that great either. Despite this, I would stay here again.

The hotel, the food, the atmosphere of ES is incredible. Barbara, front desk, had exceptional customer service and I will make sure to come back again because of her outstanding service. She should be promoted because I had a very difficult bus ride and I was overwhelmed. She supported me and it was absolutely incredible stay...

Plus, the hotel is beautiful....
