“Great Breakfast, old rooms, small pool”
Reviewed March 24, 2011

I have very mixed feelings about this hotel. Paid $209/nt + $32 tax. I went with my 4 and 13 year old sons. The hotel lobby is spacious, bright, and attractive. The room was large enough but had old worn carpet, mold stains in shower, peeling wallpaper, and was dark and dreary. It felt more like a motel. Water pressure was good in shower & towels were nice. The bed comfort was average.
Pool: Very small considering size of hotel. Almost always packed with unruly children and clueless parents. Lots of chlorine really burned eyes. Pool and whirlpool both need a thorough cleaning. If swimming is a priority, do it in the morning.
Food: The breakfast was extraordinary (omelets, biscuits/gravy, pancakes, fruit, sausage, bacon, donuts, cereal, yogurt, etc. All was quite delicious. If you like to drink (booze or otherwise), the mgrs. reception provides all you can drink for free. The reception can not cover dinner though (nuts, banana chips, yogurt pretzels, chips/salsa). Some cheese & crackers or a fruit tray would have made it much nicer.
Location: It is not on the lake as the name implies. Michigan Ave. (easily walkable), Shedd Aquarium & Field Museum were quite a hike - we walked one way & took cab home for $10 incl. tip (if it hadn't been so windy & cold we might have walked both ways)
Parking: we self-parked for $41/day. That's nuts.
If you want the Shedd Aquarium pkg., make sure to do it in advance. When I made our reservation, I did not know which day we would be going to the Aquarium so they told me to sign up for it at check in. Then at check in, they told me the Shedd pkg. had to be done in advance. Then, because we had no tickets, we would have had to wait in a line that was approx. 2 hours long. We didn't want to waste the time so we became members instead ($175) - which took about 30 min. Hopefully we return w/in a year to use it.
All said, I don't think we would return to this hotel. While the breakfast makes it tempting, overall It just was not nice enough.

This hotel is about 3.5 if I could do halfsies with reviews.

I like to summarize reviews so let's start with the goods:
1. Room is a good size, pretty comfortable set up.
2. Breakfast options are great, made to order eggs, pastries and breads, some cereal, scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit, oatmeal, apple/orange juices, coffee/tea, yogurt.
3. Dominicks groceries right across the street. Great for getting water, soda, etc.
4. Manager's reception at 5:30-7:30pm
5. Great staff. Very helpful.
6. Parking structure is in the same building. So no need to get out on the road from the lot.
7. About 3 blocks over from Magnificent mile.
8. Really fast/efficient elevators
9. Internet pretty decent speed. Hhonors get free internet.
10. Good bath stuff.

Now to the eh...
1. The room is dated. Our first room had a malfunctioning cabinet door and non working mini fridge. We called down and was moved to a different room immediately. Which was nice (hence the great staff comment). Microwave is OLD, mini fridge doesn't really cool properly, shower doesn't work properly either (the knob to change from tub to shower sticks really bad.
2. Bfast line can get really bad if you don't get there early. Manager's reception is the same way.
3. I always check the pillows and beds before we settle in the room, the pillow had a stain on it... ew...
4. Missing coffee in the amenities box
5. For some reason the trash cans/bins do not have any liners anymore. Not sure if that's a cost loss or what. But when you have a baby who's still in diapers it is kinda gross to just dump it in the can/bin. So we had to scrounge around for plastic bags.
6. Self parking is $41/night ... oy...
7. The entrance to the building is well hidden. It's actually on Illinois St. side. We meant to do valet but couldn't find the entrance so we self parked instead.

The best mini-vacation her. Wonderful hotel in all aspects. 2 blocks East of the Magnificent Mile (all the good shops were within 2-6 blocks on Michigan). Dominick's grocery store right across the street, AMC movie theater right behind the hotel (around the south corner), and a Walgreens right beside the theater. Navy Pier was within walking distance as well. The pool area was not big enough and the room could have been much cooler. The pool area was very humid and hot while we were watching our kids swim.

The FREE cook-to-order breakfast was wonderful as well as the manager's reception every evening. There is always a line for the free food, but is well worth it! The choices were abundant. Of course, the earlier you get down stairs for breakfast the shorter the line.

The beds were so comfortable! Nice to have a mini-fridge and microwave in each room especially when you can go across the street for groceries. The rooms were dark and quiet and the beds were very comfy for good sleeping. We didn't use the sleeper sofa, so cannot comment on the noise level in the living room.

Great hotel- friendly service, fantastic breakfast and our room had a lovely lake view. We have stayed in a few Embassy Suites hotel and this was the nicest, the Managers reception was great after a day of sight seeing and we had plenty of room with our three girls. Although the location isnt really central, the bus stop was a short walk away. Would highly recommend!

Have been to 6 different Embassy Suites in six different cities in the last year, and I have to say that the Chicago - Downtown/Lakefront employees made our stay memorable enough for me to make mention of the excellence of the accomodations and services that I regretably would not mention until now. We were in Chicago to visit potential colleges for my daughter. Each employee was so attentive and willing to be hospitable to my family and I, who can be a pain, I had to make mention of it. If it isn't too much trouble, please recognize Monique from housekeeping for her efforts, consideration, and personable attitude. Also Jock who was always willing to go out of his way to help me. Mandeep and Melissa H. were always ready to make anything accessable from the front desk. And I can' say enough about Ron your Maintenance Engineer. You see, I am disabled, and needed help adjusting a mobility scooter during my stay. Ron came through. If you can retain this caliber of staff, I can't help but reccommend you to family and friends.

Thank you.

The Embassy Suites was a wonderful place to stay. It has a great location for all different kinds of entertainment the Chicago has to offer. We arrived at noon and were worried about getting into our room however the hotel had our room ready for check in which was nice so we had the day to explore. Upon arrival we found that our shower did not drain the correct way. We quickly called it in and had a WONDERFUL, FUNNY man named Ron come to our help. He was in to fix our shower quickly and gave us a free movie rental for the hassle, which it was no real hassle. Everyone at the E.S was very helpful and friendly. The manager's reception and breakfast were great!!! There was a bit of a line to both however they moved quickly!!! The room was wonderful and had a lot of space. The water took awhile to heat up and the drain worked for a shower and then went back to hardly draining at all. Those were a minor glitch but we would definitely return to this hotel and we will recommend this to all our friends! Thanks for a great 30th birthday get away!
