We visited late in the afternoon in December, and although we only had an hour until closing, I'd recommend at least 1.5 hours to see this house. The sheer amount of wood work and decor is almost overwhelming, and you will want to be able to stroll slowly through the rooms and imagine life in the Guilded Age of Chicago. The late afternoon allowed for all of the interior lights to be on and gave all of the wood a special glow. There was an after hours dinner being prepped in the 3rd floor gallery and we had to dodge around tables and caterers to finish our tour, but I am sure that does not happen on a daily basis.

We did a self-guided tour, and there were numerous docents available to answer our questions, but it would be better, I think to have taken a guided tour so that you could get all of the details of the house and what Chicago was like during the years that this home was newly built. It's just a block off the commercial busyness of the Mag Mile. We were a bit confused as to how to enter because there were two signs, each with a different address. We finally realizedthat we needed to enter the door that said American College of Surgeons, and there is a security person standing at the door. Perhaps he could have been a bit more proactive after watching us walk by 4 times and asked us if we were trying to enter the museum...

What a lovely place! I've been to Chicago 3 times, yet never knew this place existed! The period interior design is amazing, particularly the wall coverings and woodwork. While we were there they had an excellent exhibit of Tiffany lamps and other glasswork.
My wife enjoyed the visit so much she returned again in the evening and also completed some Christmas shopping in the gift shop which had some unique jewelry and crafts.
Definitely recommended - and we'll visit again next time we're in Chicago!

The moment I stepped in, I knew this museum would hold an impeccable collection of art and antiquities. This former mansion has been lovingly restored to its former glory. If you appreciate fine art, antiques and the culture of Victorian times, this museum is worth the price of admission which is on the high side.

I attended a special group tour with some colleagues - the theme was "Help Wanted: The Servants Tour" and it was great! I am definitely a museum person and take every opportunity to go to cultural sites and museums. The Driehaus servants tour was fun immersive and incredibly interesting. You get to tour the museum with a guide who plays the part of the family's maid hiring new house staff (the visitors) in 1899. I would highly recommend this tour. The Museum itself is a beautiful house museum and they have a really amazing collection of decorative arts.

This magnificent mansion in the heart of downtown Chicago is especially worth a visit during the winter holidays.
