“Beautiful”

Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows

The stained glass is gorgeous. I just wish it wasn't hidden away in a hallway at Navy Pier. The nice thing is that it is never crowded but such beautiful pieces should be in more elegant surounding.

Windows from many famous artists are displayed along the hallway of Navy Pier. The display is free and always open. Navy Pier is a great place to visit while in Chicago, and this free exhibit just makes it that much more interesting.

The Smith Museum of Stained Glass is surprisingly located between attractions inside Navy Pier. We were actually headed to the Winter Wonderland event and were caught off guard when we came upon this impressive collection. At first I thought it would be better situated in a free-standing museum; however, when I saw all kinds of people of every age stop to admire some of the pieces, I realized that it reaches more people this way. With all there is to do at Navy Pier, and Chicago in general, I think it would have been easy overlook this type of art. Although we were unaware of this collection and hadn't intended to spend time here, we spent about an hour admiring the stained glass and reading the history of the art and significant pieces. Also interesting and not to be overlooked, is the Chicago timeline dating back to Native presence to the inauguration of Chicago's son, President Obama.

If you have an interest in stained glass windows, this is a lovely hors d'oeuvre. Basically it is a decorative filler in the hallway that is the entrance to the ballroom at the end of the pier. As previously mentioned, if you are at the end of the pier you might as well go in and have a look. If you are thinking of building your day around the exhibit, you might want to re-think it.

One of the interesting and often overlooked attractions on Navy Pier is the Stained Glass Displays. The pieces are not displayed in a typical museum setting but are arranged along the interior pedestrian walkway about halfway down the pier. This puts them away from the crowds and allows for a more relaxed atmosphere. It is a free exhibit so by all means walk down there and take a look. In addition, when you get down to this section of the pier it is easier to find open seating to relax and the washrooms are never crowded.
