“Interesting side show at Navy Pier”

Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows
Attraction details
Reviewed December 6, 2012

Tucked away at Navy Pier almost as a filler, this stained glass museum will surprise you with the detail and infromation about the art of stained glass. Might not be worth a special trip, but if you are at Navy Pier for another event, stop by to see this display.

I will say that it is absolutely beautiful. I would recommend that you go with someone when you walk through it as, in the evening when it isn't a busy, it can feel very deserted and a little dark/creepy to walk through the rooms alone. There were one or two shady looking characters hanging out - not inside, but nearby - I believe trying to get out of the cold. The rooms are dark which really show off the glass, but I didn't expect there not to be any security officers or ANYONE else present at only 6pm at night. Otherwise, I thought it was absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed getting to take photos of the stained glass - I had previously gone to a Tiffany exhibit where they wouldn't let you take any photos so the freedom to do so this time was great.

It was a gorgeous display that was easy to wander and peruse. Free, but would have been worth paying a fee any day. I had a lovely time.

Especially during winter months when there aren't many outdoor activities going on at (the very touristy) Navy Pier, this amazing broad collection of stained glass (Tiffany, Alfonse Mucha, etc) is a breath of fresh air (no pun intended)! Easy to see, part of the walk through the internal public area of the Pier (i.e. free). All windows are from the Chicago area and show the changes over time and different methods and much of the history behind the industry and art. Well worth every minute - don't miss!

An extensive collection of beautiful stained glass, including gorgeous pieces from Tiffany and Alfonse Mucha. Not to be missed.
