There are moments in the day, when you Need a cup of good coffee and something next to it, small and sweet or maybe not very small, but sweet.
It was exactly that moment when we're desperately passing many cafes offering late breakfasts or plentiful brunches, looking just for a cozy small table for a sip of coffee, when we found Leonidas - a true cafeteria with great coffee and showcase full of tempting sweets - small and big. Nice and pleasant service, great coffee and fantastic lemon bite. Great re-charge place!

Leonidas Cafe serves the most wonderful hot chocolate; it is made from chocolate not cocoa powder. I love the Mexican Hot Chocolate in particular; there's nothing like it when there is chilly weather. They serve Sweet Crêpes and Savory Crêpes, Belgian Waffles, Ice Cream Desserts, and gelato. Their selection of individual chocolates is good; you can buy an ornamental tin and fill it up with the chocolates of your choice. In the Summer I like to order a gelato and sit in their sidewalk cafe and watch the world go by.

I always stop here for a quick fine cup of coffee and chocolates. Their macchiato is especially foamy and delicious.

Having been to Leonidas in Belgium, when I saw the shop in Chicago, I just had to go. Leonidas' signature confections are available, and, while delicious, just aren't as fresh as they are in Belgium--the price is a lot higher, too. But, that is all to be expected, as I was told the chocolates are made in Belgium and have to be shipped to the U.S.

My friend, who had never had Leonidas in Belgium, declared the candies amazing, especially the marzipan (BLOC MASSEPAIN NOIX), which is indeed pretty delicious. Other favorites are the pineapple flavored butter cream covered in white chocolate (DESIREE BLANC) and the coffee-flavored butter cream and praline topped with a whole hazelnut, covered with dark chocolate (MANON CAFE FONDANT).

The tiny shop has small cafe tables, so if you don't mind the compact seating, it's a nice place to take a break from shopping and have a cup of hot chocolate, a pastry, or a couple of chocolates. Counter service can be hit or miss, as the young staff often seem disinterested in their customers or the product. But if you can get past that, grab your treats, take a load off, and enjoy a taste of Belgium right off Michigan Avenue!
