Delicious food, pricey, avoid lunch time, best latte, espresso, empanadas, was hoping more typical french products like cologne, cheese, wine, sausage for sale mostly restaurants. Overall worth the visit.

Full of plenty of different vendors and food options. In Chicago for a work event nearby. Had sushi for lunch, tea for snack and macaroons for dessert. Everything was delicious and the macaroons were fabulous!! Plenty of places to sit and enjoy the food and/or company. Highly recommend!

The Chicago French Market in North Clinton Street is, at best, semi-French. Much of what is on offer is simply not French. It is really a small market with French influence.

One of the retailers had a stand of Ritter chocolates which are German. The chocolate stall (not Chocolat) did have some truffles but the offerings, for the most part, could easily have been labelled as American or Canadian or Australian. The fruit and vegetable stalls did not offer peculiarly French cultivars of apples or pears. However, the fruit looked nice and fresh.

Bebe’s Kosher Deli was certainly not French. And sushi is not French. The delicatessen/cheese shop was well-stocked but only a small percentage of produce was French. As I wandered around, I saw a sign that referred to a “European style market” which is a far more accurate description.

Leaving aside branding, this is a nice collection of little stalls from which you can buy a meal on the run, some basics to take home or some special treats. There are a number of little tables and chairs but I suspect the place could benefit from having a lot more.

For brunch I tried a Reuben sandwich at the aforementioned Deli. I liked it. It had a great stack of corned beef, which is a bit daunting for people not from North America and who expect just one or two slices of meat. Daunting or not, it was great. It was a lovely sandwich. I also tried a small bag of chocolates from the not quite French chocolatier. No complaints – they were nice.

I am glad I went to this little market and recommend other visitors to Chicago give it a go. Maybe one day somebody will make it twice as big and add more genuine French stalls – next time I visit, I would like to see a boulangerie, a patisserie and a charcuterie.
