Description: Experience the exquisite cuisine of James Beard, Rising Star Chef 2014 - Jimmy Bannos Jr. As a fourth generation restaurateur, he was mentored by his father, Jimmy Bannos (Chef/Owner of Heaven on Seven) and catapulted his expertise through training by nationally renowned chefs. Since opening in 2009, under the leadership of Jimmy Bannos Jr., The Purple Pig has received numerous accolades, including being named one of 2010’s “10 Best New Restaurants in America” by Bon Appétit magazine; and a Bib Gourmand recipient from the Michelin Guide Chicago in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014; among other honors. Dubbed the "Prince of Pork" by Dana Cowin (Food and Wine Editor and Chief); Jimmy Jr. brings his love for Mediterranean food to the Windy City in fun, inventive ways - at this rustic sharable plate restaurant, conveniently located on the Magnificent Mile. Located at 500 North Michigan Avenue, the restaurant offers cheese, swine and wine, among other standout dishes, showcasing the flavors of Italy, Greece and Spain.

Seven of us waited patiently for a table at this funky, fun restaurant. It was worth the wait. We shared sixteen wonderfully creative small plates. They included charred cauliflower with toasted breadcrumbs, cornichons and parsley; roasted beets with whipped goat cheese and pistachio vinaigrette; eggplant caponata with goat cheese; fried manchego cheese with membrillo; Cape Cod mussels with house-made pancetta; octopus with green beans, fingerling potatoes and salsa verde. These are just a fraction of the tempting choices. We had a lot of fun with the pleasant wait staff and laughed for two or so hours! I urge anyone with the taste for the adventurous and delicious to go to this outstanding restaurant.

It took me a while to find it but was well worth the walk on Michigan Ave. Decided to order whatever the bartender told me (thank you Josh!!). I don't normally like peas, but the Peas and Bacon side was delightful and refreshing. I don'n normally like radishes but the Veal Flank Steak with Radishes and Buttermilk Chimichurra was delectible. Again - thank you Josh. This was a culinary delight.

"This is going to be a life changing experience and I'm excited for you" were the words used by our server after learning this was our first visit. My wife and I along with another couple had to try this place. We are confessed foodies always on the lookout for something different and unique. The Purple Pig reminds me of a tapas bar on steroids. If you're looking for meat and potatoes, this probably ain't the place for you. This IS the place if you're looking for a little adventure (ok, maybe a lot) lots of complex flavors, and aren't afraid to ask how/who/why someone came up with the combination of ingredients and menu items. Strange thing is, it works! We had a great time, enjoyed great food, thanks to a knowledgeable server who helped guide us on our journey. Perhaps it was a life changing experience.

Everything was good, even the drinks!! Try the mussels as an entrée please! We sat at the counter which is the coolest place to sit in the restaurant since you get to see all the action happening right in front of your eyes. The terrace is fabulous too and it's heated :)
