I dined at the Purple Pig the first time on a sleet-filled early Sunday evening. The place was jammed mainly with young people and the atmosphere was happy and raucous. Cheery, but not conducive to a quiet conversation. The meal was highly unusual and flavorful. The first dish was a delicious kale salad that is highly recommended. The entree was a slow cooked, soft, delicious pork shoulder and potatoes. The servings were European sized--adequate but not overwhelming. Just right for a Sunday evening. Dessert was tiramisu that was fresh, firm, and not soggy--far above average. Cost for one with a glass of wine was $45. Five star food, but a little too loud for everyday dining. Worth a special trip and highly recommended.

Pork seems to be all the rage and of all the porky places in Chicago, the Purple Pig is by far the porkiest! It's all hustle and bustle but you can usually find a spot at the bar without too much of a wait. My favs, bacon flavored turkey leg, shaved brussels sprouts, "JLT" pork jowl, tomato, frisse & fried duck egg, pig's ear with crispy kale...and no, it's not the same kind of pig's ear you give your pet to gnaw on. At first sight the menu seems a little out there, but fear no food it's all amazing plus an incredible wine list. I highly recommend if you're looking to step outside the box and go on a gastronomical adventure.

The beet salad is awesome. I do love this restaurant, but it's so popular it's often hard to get a seat.

This is a must eatery when visiting Chicago. Best to go at off-hours to avoid the wait. The pork shoulder with mashed potatoes is fabulous and I get it every time. Since they are served as small plates, it is very easy to order several things and share.
