Why would I do Navy pier:
- If I did have children, there is a lot that would be engaging for them. Ferris wheel, boat rides, kiddie food court food, ice cream, buzz
- If I am a tourist who likes to visit the top 20 attractions in Chicago
-Fear of missing out on something that everyone does in Chicago or when in Chicago

A buzzing, concrete pier with a ,lot of commercial activity. The approach roads to the navy pier are studded with kiosks offering people to play any of their favorite wii games and other such versions (paid kiosks). The pier is chaotic just because of the sheer number of people over weekends. There are a lot of restaurants with long queues to get in so I suggest that if you just need a beer, take it to go and save yourself time. Food on navy pier is not that interesting, so it would be nice to get onto the pier after any meal, rather than having it on the pier.

A lot of charter dinner/ lunch cruises (swanky ones) go from here. I was not interested in doing any of those and thus don't know their pricing. I however did do their tall ship cruise. Paid $35 each for a sunset cruise 7:30pm. The tall ship took us roughly 2miles into the lake waters. They brought up the sails for 10 minutes and lowered them again. But the bunch of people running the tall ship were dressed as pirates and were a funny, story telling bunch. The views are good. But just in case you have done a nyc cruise, don't do this cruise for the city skyline because nothing beats the nyc experience. There was a bar on the tall ship too. I enjoyed the breeze, my beer, being on water, seeing some light houses, up close and some photography.

It didn't seem like a tall ship experience since the sails are brought up for a short time but nonetheless if you are wanting to be on water, this could be an option.

As you keep walking in, the navy pier gets less busier and has ample place to just sit and enjoy the breeze and lake views.

TIP: The sun, the people, the chaos could be overwhelming if you are traveling heavy. Try and make it towards the evening hours when the sun is easy and fading.

There are tons of shops here with fairly reasonable city prices, but Navy Pier is so much more than that! There is a huge movie theater, a ferris wheel, miniature golf course, convention center, lots of restaurants, boats and water attractions and more. Its well worth the visit!

The place is definitely crowded and a very touristy place to go (if you talk to a Chicgoan they will tell you how much they hate it usually!). Having said that, I think it's worth the visit if you're in Chicago for a holiday.
The atmosphere is good, and it is ideal for families and couples alike. There are plenty of places to eat and drink as well as arcade like games and of course the big Ferris wheel. It's a perfect place to go on a Saturday night to see the fireworks that set off at 10.15 too!
If you walk right to the end of the pier, you can get some spectacular views of the Chicago skyline too, so if anything it's worth a visit just for that!

A must see on any trip to Chicago. Go during the week, very crowed on the weekends. Lots to see and do for the family. The Chicago waterfront is fabulous. So clean and you can walk for miles.

Walk out to the farthest end of the pier for a great view of the Chicago skyline. It looks even better after dark with all the building lights on. Yes, this is a tourist place and food/drinks are pricey but there isn't an admission fee. Ride the giant Ferris Wheel for more great views of Lake Michigan and Chicago's shoreline.
