Owner description: The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere! Housed in the only remaining building from the 1893 World’s Fair, MSI is a Chicago must-see. You’ll experience 14 acres of hands-on exhibits and have the chance to stand before a 40-foot tornado; climb aboard a World War II German submarine; take a run in a human-sized hamster wheel; descend into an Illinois coal mine; tour a fully functioning eco-friendly home; board a 727 hanging from the ceiling; transmit your pulse to a 13-foot, 3-D beating heart; and much more! MSI is not a place where you walk around quietly and observe. No way! You get involved in the fun—and learn—by doing. Just a few miles from downtown with convenient underground parking.

“Submarine Tour/Coal Mine Highly Recommended!”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

The highlights of the visit were the guided tours of the Submarine and Coal Mine. Both of the tour guides were energetic and funny and found ways to make the tours entertaining for both children and adults. If you have a member in your family who cannot climb stairs, I wouldn't recommend the Coal Mine, as there is no way to start the tour without first climbing a couple of flights of stairs. My family and I enjoyed the rest of the museum, as well, but we weren't terribly impressed with the IMAX movie, Space Junk. Actually, the speech before the movie about that particular IMAX theatre was more entertaining than the movie was. Enjoy!

“Better and better all the time”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

I've been going to the Museum for the last 65 years and it keeps getting better and better. It ranks high on the request list of our three granddaughters. They'll soon be familiar enough to work there as guides!

“Great place for family”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

My 3 years old kid enjoyed the Idea Factory in the meuseum. I loved the real submarine display and the space area. It was awsome, and you can actually get a tour inside the sub. Unfortunately i did not visit all the meuseum sections. But i highly recommend it for families.

exhibits for all ages - essentially....allows the "mature" visitor feel like a kid again! We were there when the "chocolate" exhibit was running, Incredibly displayed - made you want to eat the whole thing!

“Awesome Visit, Kids Galore.”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

If it were legal to taze other peoples children, this place would be even more awesome. If you don't mind the kids or the crowds, it has a lot of great exhibits and really neat perpetual science experiments n display. My favorite is the enormous Tesla coil on the ceiling of one wing. The model ships are a must see and the doll house is simply amazing and has a neat listening tour as you move around it. It is a bit out of the way, so it requires some careful maneuvering if you are a CTA novice, parking is $20 so it is a toss up as to what is cheaper. We will always go back when in town.
