“Amazing Food and Atmosphere”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

This restaurant was absolutely phenomenal. The food was delicious. I enjoyed the warm and cozy feeling of the atmosphere without it being too casual and with more of a formal setting.

“Well Done”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We had just come back from Spain and visited Mugaritz and Arzak, so we wanted to see how this stood up to those restaurants. It was not in the same league but oh so good. It is a special place with excellent food and service. The wine selection is top notch. The price is high so We might pass it on our next visit to the city, but with food this good it's hard to say.....

“Incredibly expensive”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

This was one of the more unusual experiences we've ever had, not that it was bad, it was just a little different and it was very, very expensive. By that I mean, with tip, it was $700 for the two of us. We called for a reservation based on the recommendation of our hotel concierge. We were looking for a wine pairing diner. They quoted us a price of $140 per person over the phone for 13 courses, and since it was a special occasion so we thought we go for it. But when we got there they told us that was just for the food, the wine was an extra $90 per person... We had taken a cab from downtown to Lincoln Park and by then it was 8:30. When you make a reservation, the $140 is locked in, so we were sort of "stuck" and decided to go for it.

The restaurant is in an apartment complex. We thought that was odd. We went into the lobby area of the building and the restaurant had a door off the lobby. The lounge entry has these square wooden columns that give it a "maze" type of feel when you come in. It was very quiet and dark.

After about 15 minutes we were seated and the restaurant is on the smaller side and very quiet, but a very nice atmosphere.

The staff was excellent and very attentive.

When we said it was for our anniversary they suggested champaign and verbally listed several selections without giving us any prices. We actually thought maybe they were offering complimentary champaign for our anniversary since they just offered choices verbally with no prices quoted... when we got the bill it was $35/glass.

The food was very interesting, some courses totally awesome and some just not to my liking, but that comes with a tasting menu.

The core of tasting menu was the same for both of us. Things like; "wild loupe de mer veronique, einset grapes, mushroom, osetra caviar.

I selected the stuffed quail as my feature and my wife selected the maine lobster. The quail was awesome. On the menu it was described as: stuffed quail, celery root, smoked cherry, 23-flavor gastrique.

The ora king salmon with pumpernickel, artichoke was very good. The salmon portion was very small however, less than the size of a deck of cards.

The wines were very good to excellent and we had some wines we've never tried before.

The staff is excellent and really know their wine and food. It was well over 3 hours of food and wine and service.

I can't complain about the food, but for me, I can't justify the cost. The tasting menu with the wine pairing was $230/person. With the champaign our bill was $585, tack on 20% and it totaled 700 bucks for two people and that was nearly double what we thought we were going to pay based on the price they gave us over the phone. So, I give this a poor so those considering L2o think about the price/value. Its not $$$$ its $$$$+++ and for my money, not worth the price tag.

“At this level, it has to be good, and it is”
Reviewed September 20, 2013 via mobile

The night before we were at Alinea with its Alice-in-Wonderland style entrance. L2O is completely different. When you enter the building it took a few minutes to find the extremely discrete entrance which is difficult to see. The welcome though, is professional and warm, as such an establishment should be. The ambiance is great, created by very pleasant lighting and wires hanging from the ceiling to create the illusion of seperate spaces. The menu we chose was imaginative and excellent. The service was friendly but discrete and the food was served with perfect timing. The wine list is comprehensive, although it was the very large choice of Champagne which impressed us, with many small producers, mostly not known outside of Epernay. We would most definitely recommend this for a romantic night out or with a group of food loving friends.
