They have tasty sandwiches with unusual pairings. When you finish lunch, try one of their delicious desserts such as ice cream or cheesecake. YUMMY!

We visited Macy's while on our trip to Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend. The plan was to try to eat in the Walnut Room but the wait was hours long. We literally stumble upon the cafe which is right next door and SO glad we did.

They have a small menu with soups/salads/sandwiches. I had a cup of soup and a chicken salad croissant which was delicous - perfect portion and just hit the spot. My daughter had a three cheese grilled cheese which was also delicious. My mother had a turkey sandwich on grilled cinnamon bread with swiss cheese, bacon and a cranberry mayonaise. It was out of this world!

Frankly, after reviewing the menu at both restaurants - I would again choose the Frango Cafe. We took pictures of the gorgeous Walnut room but for lunch - this was absolutely ideal!

After trawling through the crowds on Thanksgiving weekend, we were looking for a convenient place for a sandwich and a coffee. The Frango Cafe on the 7th floor of Macy's on State seemed crowded, which generally means it's worth waiting for. It's just outside the Walnut Room, so the Christmas atmosphere was high.

We were offered a table fairly quickly, but it was at least 10 minutes before our server even acknowledged our presence, and another 5 before she took our order. One of us ordered the grilled cheese, which came out stone cold. When we sent it back, our server did not apologise or even look sympathetic. She just took the plate and threw it back in the kitchen (our table had a direct view into the kitchen) and came out a few minutes later with a fresh sandwich, complete with melting cheese this time.

I had the half sandwich and soup, and it was average, at best. The half sandwich was two pieces of bread without butter or spread of any kind and a very small scoop of filling. It was enough food, but it just wasn't presented well. The (vegetable) soup was hot, but fairly tasteless.

Our drinks were never replenished. I suspect our server had been given too many tables to handle, and she was struggling.

With so many other good restaurants around to compete, I expected better, but I think Macy's has decided that they have a captive audience, so they don't have to try as hard with this place. It's times like these that I really miss Marshall Fields . . .

I had a 1/2 sandwich and soup with a slice of ice cream pie. The food was good. $8.95 for the special which is OK in the Loop. The service was extremely slow. The cafe is on the 7th floor of Macy's. A nice place to sit for lunch. I hope the service is not typically so poor.
