Best Western River North Hotel

Reviewed April 3, 2013

I researched for several weeks before booking this hotel back in January for the past 4 days stay. I will list the pros and cons.
Pros:
*Michelle at the front desk and Wallace. These 2 individuals are what makes their customer service fantastic.
*Free parking and Location
*Large pool with great views

Cons:
NOISE. Not outside noise. We brought a box fan with us so it wasn't traffic noise outside. It was inside. Our first night we were in 417. It sounded like the people above us were playing basketball all night, I did call front desk and they said they would call them, it got quiet for awhile but started back up again. I did not sleep. Also everytime someone went in or out of a room you hear the doors slam. We asked to be moved to the top floor of that building, which was the 5th. They moved us and moved our luggage up as well, which was nice. While we were doing this, another family asked to do the same thing. We moved to 523 and obviously there was nobody above us but doors opening and closing all night was still a problem. I managed to get a few hours sleep until 6:23 AM, when the garbage trucks come and park just outside the window. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. Our last night I slept with a pillow over my head, which also helped. Our son had been sick and was still sleeping when, at 8:15am, 2 housekeeping ladies were talking and laughing LOUDLY just outside our room and woke him up. This is not a quiet hotel inside, if you are looking to get a good nights sleep I would strongly suggest staying somewhere else.
*The layout of this hotel is crazy. I got lost 3 times. By the third day I had it figured out but every single person I encountered on the elevator said the exact same thing.
*No hot tub. I knew this when I booked, but it would be such a huge bonus.

Bottom line, if you are a heavy sleeper or don't mind not getting a good nights sleep, this is a great deal.

Room Tip: Choose the top floor, otherwise you will hear everyone walking above you. Choose a room that does n...

We stayed at the Best Western River North hotel during this past weekend (Mar 29-31, 2013). Being a long weekend and without reservations, we weren't sure if we would be able to get a room. On our drive into Chicago we made a list of hotels to stay in. Our criteria: close to subway, inexpensive or free parking at or near the hotel, chain (I was travelling with a novice travellor that was weary about staying in a private establishment like a B&B). The Best Western fit all of our criteria and was thus top on our list of choices. Arriving, there was very little room at the inn, but we managed to get one of the last in the hotel, though we would have to wait a couple of hours before we would get the keys to the room. The price was also a little more than we had anticipated, however with the advantage of the free parking and knowing it was a busy long weekend, we bit the bullet and accepted the additional charges. The reservation desk staff gave us a few suggestions for places within walking distance where we could grab a bite to eat. We were also able to park our car in their garage straight away, and left it there for the duration of our trip.

After refuelling with a tasty and veggie-filled lunch (we had just spent 9 hours driving and eating in greasy spoon diners) that hit the spot, we got our keys to the room. The hotel lobby is fine: small but servicable. The first elevator we took only went to half the hotel rooms, our room was in the other side of the building. After a little confusion, we were sorted out by the house cleaning staff who helpfully showed us the way to our room. The room was large and clean with an LCD TV and free wifi. The decor was dated, and the view was disappointing. We overlooked the trash bin (open), a johnny-on-the-spot portable toilet, and an alleyway. There was also a streetlight situated right in front of our window. After freshening up, we went out to explore the city. The hotel was in a great location - close to tourist traps like the magnificent mile, but also very close to the red line "Grand station". We walked to the river and millenium park from the hotel. Returning to the hotel at the end of the night, we began to realize...how noisy the hotel was. We could hear every footstep by the guests upstairs, downstairs or next door; every time the elevator doors opened or closed, and every time the ice machine filled up. Thankfully, we were exhausted from our journey, so we were able to sleep, and we didn't spend much time in the room so the noise was only bothersome in the moments falling asleep and waking up. Had we booked the room for a week or two instead of two nights; or in the summer, we might have felt differently and would probably have looked for another hotel (especially if that trashbin lid was still open - yum ripe garbage in the sun).

We were pleased that the hotel offered coffee, tea, hot chocolate and granola bars in the morning, and there were plenty of breakfast options in the neighbourhood as well (for example: Yolks). The staff are friendly, helpful and full of suggestions for places to go. They did not hoever have toothbrushes or toothpaste in the rooms, luckily with a Walgreens across the street we remedied that inconvenience quickly enough.

This hotel has many benefits (their staff, location, and amenities such as free parking). They also have a few disadvantages - some can be fixed (room decor, move location of garbage bin and portable toilet, hire local graffiti artists to paint on alleyway walls to make them look interesting) and some that would require a lot of work (soundproofing the walls and floors - or perhaps offer a discount for those rooms).

Overall, I'd give the hotel a thumbs up with a 'but'.

Room Tip: If you have the option to request a room, request one away from the elevators near the end of one of...

Thank you for writing a review of us on TripAdvisor. More travelers are relying on these to help inform their travel decisions and we appreciate your honest feedback.
We thank you for your compliments on the service and amenities as well as our central location. The issues you mentioned with the alley are, unfortunately, out of our control as the items you mentioned belong to other businesses connected to the alley. We are sorry you experience an issue with noise but we're glad to see that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. Please come back to see us again the next time you're in Chicago.

If you're looking for a moderately priced, well-kept hotel in a terrific Chicago location, this is the place for you! The service was efficient, helpful and considerate. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. And the location was perfect for us --within walking distance of downtown and in the midst of many restaurants and theaters. This place isn't The Ritz, but it is friendly and comfortable and exceeded our expectations. We visited in March, so our windows were closed, but we were not bothered by noise at all. We will definitely stay here on our next trip to Chicago.

Our First stay in Chicago was made extra pleasant by the staff and accomodations at Best Western Plus!!!! From the moment we pulled into the FREE PARKING GARAGE to the minute we checked out we could not have been more pleased. The onsite restaurant was also excellent and affordable for a family of 4. It is centerally located within walking distance to Navy Pier, Willis Tower and the Magnificent Mile. Next time I visit Chicago I don't think I will even consider staying anywhere else.

Stayed here for 2 nights March 26-28. We really enjoyed our stay the Free Parking was a major plus for being in a major city. The room was of good size the bathroom was very small which was ok because we didnt spend much time in the room. The roof top deck is amazing views of the city at night and the pool is also in good shape. Cant beat the Location there are a lot of sights and places to eat and bars within walking distance of the hotel.

My families first stay in Chicago and Best Western was a great choice. We arrived before check in but our room was ready and we were able to check in. Front desk ladies were awesome and very friendly. The location is wonderful. Even though the weather was chilly, we were able to walk to a lot of the places we wanted to visit - the location cannot be beat. The room was as expected, 2 double beds, nothing fancy but it fit what we needed. The tub was very slow to drain but we didn't report it, I know they would of fixed it had we said something. It is a noisey area but when I turned the room fan on we didn't hear a thing, The beds were comfortable and we slept well. The concierge was awesome!!! He helped us greatly when walking was going to be too far - there was a guy at the front desk, Jason, he wasn't so helpful when it came to us wanting to know between taxi or bus, but the concierge's service made up for Jasons' lack of helpfulness. The free parking was great, saved us alot of money!!! the pool was nice and so was the workout area. Would stay here again, next time when its warmer and we can use the out door deck. Bonus was being able to park for free still until 5pm after we checked out. So great!!! FYI - the Hard Rock Cafe down the block I would avoid - rude staff and very loud compared to other Hard Rocks I have visited
