“Great Staff & Location, Great All Around Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2008

I had read all the reviews written about this hotel and most were good, but they really did not do the hotel justice. Affinia is a wonderful hotel. Yes they do have construction going on and the lobby is small but the staff and the quality of the rooms more than made up for that. We had a group of 14 stay Feb.8-10th with all diffrent styles of rooms thru the travelzoo special. Some had the standard rooms which just have a shower( but a huge walk in shower) or the studio suite which was just as big and spacious as the junior suite which both had a bath tub in place of the walk in shower. All the rooms were great, very clean and comfortable. The hotel have no resturant but across the street in chicago place there is a Mcdonalds & a food court. A short distance away is a nice sit down breakfast place call West-Egg, very good food. Walgreens is right around the corner. This hotel is, at the most, 300 feet from michigan ave. Chicago Place, "900" the shopping store and Macy's, Disney store, on and on and on, are all at your foot stool if you stay here. Wonderful location. The staff was GREAT our group had ages from 9yrs. to 80yrs. and they were all catered to like they were the only ones at the hotel everyone felt welcome and special, it was awsome. One of the persons in our group wanted a handicap room, which we thought was going to be on the ground floor but it was not, so he was upset at first, but when he saw his room and experienced the stay he was happy and already is making plans to return in May. The only draw back is the elevator system its sort of crazzy, you have to use two diffrent elevators to get to certain floors, that was weird.

We found this hotel on Travel Zoo for a quick weekend get away with our two boys and were a little nervous because we saw that it was going through a rennovation. But the price was hard to pass on ($99/night) and it had free parking (normally $40/day), so we bit the bullett.

WOW! What a pleasant surprise. From the staff, to our room, to the location. Everything overshot our expectations. We paid the extra $20 to upgrade to a suite and it was worth it. The room was spacious and decorated contemporary, yet very comfortable. My wife loved the Aveda bath products and our boys enjoyed the view and the extra room.

I worry that once the renovation is completed in March, we will not be able to afford staying here, but I am glad we had the opportunity and encourage anyone else to take advantage of the reduced rate now while it is still going on.

From the moment we arrived at the Affinia Chicago, we were impressed! Staff was WONDERFUL and so helpful.
We arrived at about 2:00pm and were able to check in immediately. Being that we are visitors to the Windy City, we asked the staff if they could recommend a restaurant that would serve us well, give us great food and allow us to make it to our show (Wicked) on time (8:00pm). The staff gave a few recommendations and offered to call the restaurant in order to make reservations for us. Being that it was a Saturday night, we weren't too sure we could get in. Well, they did it! We had our reservations for the Capital Grill and were even comped an appetizer! WOW!
The staff was always great to us... greeting us as we came and went, making suggestions of restaurants (which were all fabulous), arranging for transportation and keeping our bags safe after we checked out so that we could shop without being loaded with our bags. GREAT SERVICE!!
I have read a few reviewers who complain about the fact that there is no restaurant right now - since they are renovating..... With all the great restaurants within blocks, there really is no need to worry about the fact that there is no restaurant on site.
The rooms are simply MARVELOUS! They are beautiful and tastefully decorated! The beds are the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and our pillows were great too! Robe in the room... Aveda bath products..... Fridge in the room (to keep your free bottled water cold in)...... what more could you ask for?
I would highly recommend this to anyone!
The only problem? We were only there for one night!

we chose this hotel in chicago because of the great deal that is on travelzoo. the remodeled rooms were terrific. we were greeted every time we came in or left the hotel, along with being offered water or snacks. we knew that the restaurant and bar were not in service. but that was ok, there is a gino's pizza next door. it is very close to shopping and lots of choices of restaurants.
the beds were very comfortable, and they give you a choice of different kinds of pillows.
we will go back there again.
my only complaint is that we didn't see the sign for the hotel right away it was obsecured by the scafolding in front of the building.
but that was a small problem.

  • Liked — very nice remodeled rooms
  • Disliked — didn't see the sign for outside that says affinia

Recently completed a one (1) night stay at the Affinia Chicago Hotel and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Chicago for either business or pleasure. Though, if you are coming for pleasure and are looking for a hotel with a pool, etc. this isn't the property for you - though if you travel here in the summer months, Oak Street Beach is walking distance from the Hotel. However, if you are looking for a great place to stay, that is convenient to Chicago's dining, shopping and entertainment venues the Affinia Chicago would be a perfect choice.

The rooms are modern in design and furnishings and the bathrooms are large and have Aveda amenities.

At the present time, the hotel doesn't offer room service from an in-house restaurant (which will be open soon) but does have a comprehensive listing of restaurants that are part of CEO Delivers, so that if you don't want to leave the room, you can a meal delivered to you from some of Chicago's best restaurants.

Overall the Affinia Chicago is an excellent hotel in a city full of great properties and I will be staying here again.

We arrived at the Affinia on 17 January, looking forward to the warm snug bar we have been used to when we stayed at the hotel (when it was the Fitzpatrick) on several occasions before. We were dismayed on arrival to find that the extent of the renovations being carried out meant there was:
a) no bar; and
b) no restaurant or food facilities.

The room did not even have a mini bar, so there was no food available and the only drink available was a complimentary botle of mineral water in reception. This is not, by anyone's definition, a hotel. I question whether the "hotel" should be open when its facilites are so bare and so much work is being carried on.

The rooms have been nicely redecorated but the appearance of the hotel is very much a mixed bag, with smart alongside shabby. The room's air conditioning is very noisy - too noisy to have on at night (which meant that the inside of the window was frozen over in the morning!).

Part of our problem was we had booked through a web-site, hotelsrus.com. That web-site entry stated incorrectly that the hotel had a bar. The hotel point out that their own web-site does accurately reflect the situation. So we were stuffed. Affinia, to cap it all off, decided only to refund us only 1 of the 2 unused nights, even though we had made our complaint at a very early stage.

We checked out after just one night, and moved to the InterContinental, to enjoy the normal facilities one would associate with a hotel.

A most unsatisfactory situation, all in all.

Guests will undoubtedly have a better time when the hotel facilities reopen later in 2008. Anyone planning to stay at the Affinia before then should recognise that the only facility consists of their room, and is advised to check with the hotel directly to see what facilities are, or are not, on offer.

But I for one won't be going anywhere near the Affinia Chicago, or any Affinia hotel, again. And I'll be very wary when booking through a 3rd-party web-site, as clearly the information can be very inaccurate (and there is no recompense or help when things go wrong).

From the moment that we arrived (at 6 a.m. and after a long COLD evening of travel), we were greeted and treated like royalty from the desk manager, Milton, and staff. We three couples booked the "Adventure" on Travelzoo and were not sure what to expect from a Hotel that was under renovation. Let me tell you that the rooms, comfort of the beds, decor, snacks, attention to detail in directions, suggestions for resturants, shopping and area attractions, anything and everything that we asked of the staff, was all FIRST CLASS! The preformance of 'Wicked' and Devon's seafood resturant were supreme! I was amazed how the staff remembered our names and welcomed us back after each outing. We can hardly wait to return to the 'family' at the Affinia! Milton made our visit extremely Memorable! Thank You!
