Having stayed in hostels around Europe, the first place I check for now when I travel, is a hostel, preferably an international one. Hostelling international has become my new favourite chain in the USA and in fact I have joined their membership programme. My past experiences with the overpriced and crampy hostel chains in Europe makes me always want to compare such chains and I can say for sure that HI has full 5 stars from me.In terms of three key things that every traveller looks for viz.,(1) Location (2) Services for the rent you pay and (3) cleanliness, this trumps all my past experiences. Located within the downtown area, it is walking distance from most centre-city attractions. The metro rail system crisscrosses the area all throughout, so getting around is easy and cheap. Dorm rent is way cheap for the area; they provide free walking tours of the center city twice a week; a decent free breakfast everyday; lockers (bring your padlocks) and extra safe storage at the counter if you need them. The building in general and the rooms in particular are spacious, with plenty of extra showers and toilets outside the rooms. There are communal spaces on every floors in addition to the dining area on level 2, a huge launge in the lowest level plus very good WiFi support. All entrances to the lifts and doors are swipe -key operated and very safe. The locality is also quite safe (located amidst a few colleges/universities) and you get to meet lots of interesting international travellers. The rooms are clean and have a decent supply of towels, toiletries, extra blankets and duvets; with the staff always at your service.

I was at the place during what I would call a slow week perhaps due to the snow, but still met people from Ukrain to Brazil and New Zealand.

I will certainly be back to reap the full benefits of staying here soon. And the fact that they send you a followup e-card for feedback means they care about quality.

I stayed here in August 2013, for two nights apart of a travelling trip and was in a mixed 8 bed dorm. The room was very spacious, seperate toilet and en suite which was also very clean. Next to my bed was a light and plug socket which was very handy to charge my electionics also there was lockers in the room.

The location was perfect very close to the city centre and has shops, restraunts, transport links near by. Only reason one star for swimming pool and gym is I don't think they had one? If they did I never went to it so I can't comment

Next time I go back to Chicago I'd stay here again and also would recommend it

It is not always easy to find a good hostel in any US city, especially one in such a great location, but i stayed in this HI nearly 10 years ago and was happy with it when i stayed in a larger dorm room in my early 20's. Now in my early 30's i was a little apprehensive about staying in such a large and busy hostel. with the option of having smaller 4 bed female dorms, with bathrooms though i need not have worried. The room was more like an apartment, with a separate seating area and small kitchen. The hostel is in a ridiculously good location, within walking distance of the train and bus stations and surrounded by places to eat. Near the lake and parks too, it is much better value than any hotel. Breakfast is included and has a good selection and there is a lot of information on what to see and do in Chicago on notice boards as well as a travel info center. I would certainly stay again and would recommend others to stay too.

Room Tip: Choose a 4 bed dorm with private bath if available. Bear in mind that in the summer season this hos...

I spend 3 nights in the hostel in a lovely room on the 5th floor, better than the rooms in YMCA (Boston/NY). The location is perfect, and the breakfast is good too. A lot of free maps, guides, tours, free Wi-Fi and information provided. Even if you travel alone like me you can make friend and have fun.

I spent two nights at HI Chicago. This was my first trip to Chicago and the concierge made it very easy to find my way around the city. The hostel is in a great location that is very close to the city's core. Many of the sights are just a short cab ride, or bus trip away. The room, bathroom and other facilities were very clean. I would highly recommend staying here.

I spend a night in Chicago in 2012 and found HI Hostel Chicago on the hostel bookers website. It is very conveniently located two blocks from the train station, and well positioned in the loop district. I could easily walk to the lake, to Willes tower and through the streets of downtown Chicago. The room was spotless, with a comfortable bunkbed and locker. There was a bathroom in each dormitory of 6 people and plug points in useful places. The staff were friendly and kindly assisted me with my broken bag lock. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a clean hostel experience.

The International Hostel in Chicago stood up to it's billing as one of the premier overnight stays in the city. The location inside the loop was great for easy access, and the concierge was ready to help with travel. While it may not be a social hostel, the entire staff was nice and communal dining hall lead did allow for conversation between travelers. The food was serviceable, but it was not a high quality meal, essentially exactly what I payed for. The rooms were also comfortable and clean, but once again exactly what was payed for.
