“Really pretty bad”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

Our room smelled so much of tobacco we asked right away to move. We were accommodated the next day, and the staff was cooperative. The rooms are very bare bones and the hotel is quite shabby. The rooms are clean. In the first room, the sink faucet did not dispense cold water. There's plenty of hot water however! The curtains in the second room did not work. Considering what hotels cost in Chicago, which is a bit of a mystery, more expensive than Washington, DC and several European cities, it's a reasonable alternative, but really way too worn.

There's an excellent Italian restaurant, Gioco, within walking distance, and a Trader Joe. The restaurant next door isn't bad, but the service is slow. Yolk further on was much better.
There are Michigan Avenue buses right outside and views of the Field Museum. It's an OK
location if you're not looking for night life. Taxis are also very expensive.

I'm giving the hotel two stars because the staff tried to be helpful. But did that room stink! And I have a $25 charge I have to dispute. There's no refrigerator so no bar charges.

We did a week-long anniversary / fun with toddler trip. You could spend much more for a swankier hotel but we found this place to be the best combination of value, cleanliness and hospitality in downtown Chicago. It is within walking distance of Grant Park and also pretty close to Chinatown on the south side as well.
It's not as modern looking as some other hotels but it seems reasonably well kept (although there was some construction on our floor during our stay).
All of the people behind the desk were very friendly and helpful.
We weren't that impressed with the attached restaurant (so many other places with better food and value in Chicago).
Parking was $24 / day which isn't cheap but I guess pretty good relative to location and other nearby hotels.
Great location and value overall, well kept.

Booking online, we were able to get a great rate for this hotel, about $135/night for a three-day, two-night weekday trip to Chicago. It was the best rate I could find in the area, and on-site, secured valet parking with unlimited in/out privileges was $24/night (also the lowest in the area).

A lot of the other reviews mentioned finding street or other paid lot parking nearby, but we made a few trips around the block and didn't find any parking options where we felt comfortable leaving our vehicle for a few days, so we forked out the extra $24/night. I think it was worth it.

The check-in process was quick. There were several people in front of us but there were two young women working the computers and they made an effort to take care of everyone efficiently.

We requested a lake view room and they set us up in a king room that was just the ticket. It was VERY spacious compared to your typical Chicago hotel room - but that's because the room was a barrier-free (read: handicapped accessible) room. I don't know how we were able to get this room but it was great! The bathroom was enormous and the view was beautiful.

The bedding/drapes definitely need an upgrade but other than that the room was clean and pretty darn nice. Vending/ice on every other floor, great air conditioning... the only issue worth mentioning is the slow and tiny elevator with a strange smell haha.

Some people have certain thoughts about the Grant Park area - we had friends telling us not to walk around our hotel at night. Of course you should always be aware of your surroundings, especially in a city like Chicago, but we thought their concerns were a little bogus, as we never felt unsafe. The hotel was super close to the CTA/Metra station and we could get anywhere in the city quickly and cheaply! We went to a White Sox game, the Sears (or Willis) Tower, etc. and it was all so easy and accessible from the hotel location.

The best part about staying at the Best Western Grant Park? Yolk is just around the corner! Everything there is excellent and they are open for breakfast and lunch.

Location was great, right across from Grant Park and a short walk from many things we wanted to see. It was also easy to catch the bus and hop on the El, too. The staff was terrific. The room itself was fine for our needs; we basically just needed a clean place to sleep.
We were on the 7th floor, right across from the elevator, so we did get a bit of extra noise due to people coming and going. The room was in need of an update: the carpet had obvious seen a lot of miles walked on it and was frayed in places, and the decor seemed a bit outdated. Also, there was a small gap between window panes. The windows were obviously able to open at some point in the less safety-obsessed past, but now the handle had been removed. Because of the gap, cold air would blow in during the evening, so we had to turn the heat up a bit higher than normal. No refrigerator or microwave.

Bathroom was clean. Hotel had a restaurant attached to it. We got coffee from there in the morning and thought it was mighty fine. Didn't try the food. Valet parking is available for $24 an evening. We were satisfied and may stay there again. I do need to note again that the staff were all wonderful.

Hotel was in a great area on South Michigan Avenue, right across from Grant Park. We could see Lake Michigan from our window. Getting to the bus and the El station were easy. Just a short walk to Millenium Park and such features as Cloud Gate (The Bean). Short bus ride to the Magnificent Mile and Navy Pier. Also a wonderful breakfast restaurant nearby, called The Bongo Room. One of the top breakfasts we've had anywhere. Another nearby place we liked was Lou Malnati's Pizzeria--great deep dish!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that's not close to the elevator.

I would like to personally thank all the staff at The Best Western Grant Park for making my stay in Chicago a memorable and very enjoyable one. I was in Chicago for The Men's Health Urbanathlon and wanted a room close to downtown and close to amenities. This is definitely the place. When I called to book a room, the only room they had left was on a smoking floor but even though the hallway smelled faintly of smoke, our room did not and that was a pleasant surprise. The room itself was a little dated but the bed had down pillows, down comforter and mattress was new...that's about all I needed and worried about. The room still was quite satisfactory. Front desk staff and bell staff very amazing. Particularly, my friend "Octavio" was quite the ambassador for the hotel and the city of Chicago. This gentleman made every effort to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. We even decided on a whim to stay an extra night and he not only worked it so that we could, he ensured us an even better rate than we were paying for the previous nights. I take my hat off to all staff...couldn't have asked for better people. Instead of run in New York or San Francisco next year, we will be going back to Chicago and mainly because of our great experience. You will not be disappointed here...and let's be honest, when you are in Chicago you should be out enjoying the city, not sitting in your room on Best Western's free wifi complaining about how your TV isn't a flat screen. Every pub I went to had one so go check theirs out! LOL. Thanks Best Western Grant Park!

The hotel itself is in a good location, but for the $190 a night I am paying, just not worth it. The rooms were updated years and years ago. The restaurant, like the exercise room, doesn't open till 7AM. And to make matters even worse, the exercise room is located on the only smoking floor. I used to smoke and have no problems with "smokers", but do I have to smell it (heavily) while I work out? And their reason for why they don't open the exercise room till 7? Too much noise. Yet it doesn't seem to bother them that their ice makers sound like mini lear jets trying to take off! I can hear it 8 rooms away.

I also had to call down to get the wireless connection code. I called four times, each letting it ring 20 times or so. Finally I went down to the front desk. Surprise, two people standing there. One finishing up with a customer. I asked why she couldn't have picked up the phone (which was ringing again) and say "front desk, please hold". She seemed shocked that I would expect such customer service.

I also NEVER took my socks off, which should tell you how dirty the room is, yuk!

Skip this hotel! I found another independent hotel one block away, next time that is where our staff stays.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

A very convenient little hotel that is close to the downtown core, very close to the wonderful waterfront parks and is close to the subway system.

We had no problems travelling from the airport to here (requires one change) and there is also a grocery store nearby and some restaurants (though nightlife is a little further away).

The room was clean and neat, but is a little small if you're used to bigger and roomier types of rooms. The doors are a little thin in terms of noise reduction but this was never issue.

Overall, a very good room that's convenient.

Room Tip: Chicago is always expensive, but it's possible to get a room that overlooks the lake at this ven...
