“Business savvy at the Fairmont”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

The Fairmont Chicago is a great place to stay!

For the business traveler, the amenities are tops. In your room, you have a hands free phone and a speakerphone at the desk. They charge a minimal fee for toll free calls as well. It also has a large screen TV that has a console that you can hook your PC up to view through the TV. You can also have an ethernet connection and has power outlets up off the floor where you don't have look for them.

The beds and bedding are great - high level linens and very comfortable.
TV includes premium stations like multiple HBO stations.

The bathroom is well organized, has both a shower and a bathtub, and the toilet is in a separate area. Nice area with makeup mirror (although a small stool would have been welcome).

Closet has a laptop compatible safe.
The hotel is near conference facilities and are connect via an underground walkway.

I very much recommend the restaurant too (Aria) - good food!

Lastly, there is a self serve kiosk by the front desk that you can use to print off your boarding pass.

Also, if you are a Fairmont President's member -- your Wifi or Ethernet connect is included in your rate.

So - for comfort and convenience - stay here!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake - loved having such a great view.

Two major points to this review:
*Aging and unattractive rooms and fixtures
*Excellent personal service (otherwise I would give it a poor rating instead of average)

My room was just plain old looking and feeling - scratches on walls and furniture, mildew and failed grout in the shower, low water pressure in the shower, coffee machine and TV remote didn't work. The bed itself was comfortable but as with many hotels, the air was far too dry for my personal comfort and that made it hard to sleep well. Another problem with sleeping there is the elevators are really loud. I was at least one room from the elevator shafts, but the noise would wake me up.

Internet service was expensive and unreliable - both wired and wireless would randomly disconnect.

Every time I had to interact with someone (room service for coffee and housekeeping to fix the in room coffee machine) they were great. They voluntarily offered to remove the coffee service from my bill, I didn't even have to ask. The staff were always attentive and respectful - which made it easier to deal with the problems. The wait staff at Aria Bar were excellent.

So, once you leave the lobby, you just feel like there is peeling paint and old fixtures. Old is definitely the word I would use to describe it.

Check your bill on the way out: they put about $40 worth of minibar items on my bill that I didn't use. They were friendly enough when I asked them to take it off but really, it shouldn't happen and I shouldn't even have to make that unpleasant call in the first place.

So overall, for $220 + tax ($35) per night - you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? At least it's more affordable than the Radisson across the street. Maybe try the Embassy Suites across the river.

One final point - there is an odd smell located in the lobby at the foot of the escalators in front of the door to Aria Bar - it could possibly be toasted sesame seeds, but if I'm being honest, it smells like urine. It makes approaching the Aria Bar and Aria itself sort of gut wrenching - the smell does not go into Aria Bar I can say from experience, so if you can sort of hold your breath through the cloud of whatever it is, you'll be fine..

Of course, hotel owners will say, I should have mentioned these issues during my stay - but honestly, I have better things to do with my time than serve as the quality control team for an ostensibly luxury hotel.

Rely on the concierge; they are excellent. Restaurant recommendations were uniformly memorable experiences. None was touristy. At one where the wait for a table exceeded 5 minutes, mentioning again the Fairmont resulted in immediate seating. Breakfast at the hotel was expensive, but good. You felt at home, but your walet or purse was lighter.

Room Tip: We asked for a view and got one of Lake Michigan.

We stayed here for 3 nights in April. The room was very nice, clean and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom had both a tub and a separate shower. There was also a mirror with a shelf outside the bathroom which helped one to get ready if someone else was in the actual bathroom. The room had windows that opened but when closed blocked most any street noise. Our room had 3 different views and even though raining a couple of the days, enjoyed the view from all of them. There were small signs of wear in the room but none that were blatent or would prevent me from staying at this hotel again. All of the staff was helpful and pleasant.

Nice luxury hotel near Millenium Park. Really great service. Room service was quick and efficient. But the food was not all that great. The salmon burger seemed to be made of very stale fish-- as was the salmon platter. I would not order either one again and actually was ill after the burger. So one major drawback is no informal, quick eating spot within the hotel. That's why I had to order room service twice. There is a deli about a block away -- but that seems like a long way to walk in freezing rain or darkness or both. Shopping on Miracle Mile is a bit of a hike.

This is a great hotel. We stayed here with family for a few days. Although other reviews have mention that it is a little way out we found this hotel very conveinient. The staff are great especially the door staff who always greeted us. Had lovely, clean room. Slept well. No noise noted from corridors. Our airline lost our luggage but the staff made sure we had all toiletries we needed and ensured we were looked after. They also provided us with a cake for our Silver Wedding. Fab hotel. Would definitely stay here again, it was great!!!!

Had to stay overnight at the hotel on business. We had a great view of Lake Shore Drive and the lake. Comfortable room and outstanding nights rest. The bed and pillows were the best I have slept on at a hotel. Based on the bed alone, I would stay there again. Worth the extra money.
