“Magic in a bowl”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Sometimes you just obsess about something..and that something for me is the egg noodle soup, which is stir-fried with spicy w garlic chili, which is placed in a spicy broth, big chunks of tofu (be carefuly, they absorb the heat of the broth quickly), vinegary pieces of eggplant, and a sprinkling of fried garlic. I can't figure out what is in this broth, but it's so flavorful and tasty. I just tried the Duck/Pho dumplings, which were deep fried and came with a soy reduction, that tasted like it had star anise in it. Be prepared to sit at communal tables, which is very common in Asia. Once you order, you can sit, and your meal will be brought to you. Very friendly service.

“Unique and delicious food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Amazing food and a very unique dining experience. Communal tables, with only a short wait.
It is a very small BYOB restaurant, but very worth the wait. Everything was delicious. My favorites were the rice cake bowl, chicken and mango. The short rib rice and the wrinkle beans. Will be returning, also want to try Chef Kim's other two restaurants. His use of Asian spices and favors is amazing.

“great food, fast service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

We stopped here on a Saturday night and got in with only a very short wait. We weren't really sure how much food to get for the 2 of us. We ended up ordering more than we needed, but we wanted to try a few since they all sounded so good.

It is a counter order restaurant with communal dining tables. For the two of us, that worked out fine, although not sure how long you would have to wait if you were with a larger group. The BYOB is an always welcome benefit.

Both noodle dishes (Urbanbelly Ramen & Soba) we tried were really good. We probably should have just got one noodle dish because they are very large and we really couldn't eat them fast enough while they were still hot. We also tried a couple dumplings (Chicken & Mushroom and Pork & Cilantro). Again, these were both very good.

Several of the rice dishes sounded great, but we decided to save those for next time, since there will definitely be a next time.

The only problem we had here is that we felt a little rushed. To be clear, it wasn't because the staff was rushing us or anything, I just think it had to do with the communal dining. We felt like we needed to hurry to open up a seat for someone else.

“Absolutely amazing food by Bill Kim”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012 via mobile

I went here after having gone to Urban Belly's brother, Belly Shack.

Urban Belly is the slightly up market version, found in a non descript part of Irving Park. On a Friday night at 8pm we only had to wait 10 minutes for a seat for three of us. It is BYO(B), but there is a bar across the road that you can get beer from if needs be.

The menu is amazing, but not very descriptive. We had the duck and pho dumplings, short ribs with rice, pork belly ramen, eggplant side and the chilli chicken papaya salad special. The food was simply amazing.

The eggplant was a cold side and was marinated in miso paste, mirin and soy (i think, ingredients not listed). It was delicious.

Green papaya salad with chilli chicken was fantastic but pretty spicy (medium-hot).

Ramen was great with pork bits, large barley grains and chewy, delicious oval shaped noodles. Wow.

Duck and pho dumplings were delightfully crunchy with an explosion of flavour as you crunched into them.

Total for 3 people -$50, and we were so full. A fantastic experience and simply great food in the suburbs of Chicago.

Great staff, great food. Yum.
