“The Great Lobby - THe Palmer House”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

Outside was noisy because the elevated trains but that was kinda fun to. Once inside I looked upo and felt like wow this is some placed. The lobby is worth stopping to check out even if your not staying at the hotel.

Our room was big and had two baths and well supplied. A very good location to get out and see the city.

The price was a reat rate.

This hotel is optimally located in Chicago's "Loop" -- near shopping, excellent eateries and museums. The hotel is kept in impeccable condition, common areas and rooms. Service staff during registration and in the restaurant were excellent -- attentive, responsive, knowledgeable. I look forward to staying at the Palmer House again.

Love this hotel. Location is great, but the spirit of a true Grand Hotel and of the Golden era of the 20ies make it one of the most special places in the world. Friendly staff, great rooms, excellent food and beverage and spectacular lobby.

To be honest, this hotel cause many conflicting emotions in me. On the one hand it is undeniable jewel in the necklace of the architectural achievements of Chicago and America as a whole, for years has been a magnet for cultural, social, political, and if you like underground life of Chicago, on the other, as these times are gone forever, you may consider renovating some parts of the hotel and bring them in a form corresponding to the 21st century.
In a word, for the business traveler is better to have in the room bathrobe and slippers, not a champagne bucket, and the hotel can not be proud that never have closed for repairs, and when the guest tries to lie down in the afternoon, given the time difference between USA and Europe, the construction team to drill a few feet away with a drill ....

Then do not help the fact that you sleep in the first hotel in America introduced electricity, telephone and elevator use and that these floors and corridors are passed presidents and Hollywood stars.

Overall, because of the architectural splendor, the location in the city center, the enormous historical value and any strong feelings that are generated by the contact of man with all this, the hotel is worth a visit.

Thank you for your feedback. After reading your review it is evident that you know your history and much of the history about our hotel. It is apparent from your review that you stayed with us recently while we have been undergoing a major project to restore some of the brick structure on the exterior of our building. Part of what is so amazing about the Palmer House is that it is the longest continuing operation Hotel in the United States. We are continuing that history by trying to do major repairs and construction during the day time hours when typically guests are out exploring the city our away for conventions and business in the city. There are some individuals that stay during the week that for one reason or another are in the hotel when this construction has occurred and when we are notified by the guest that it is disturbing we have stopped the project for a brief time, or if possible moved them to another location in the hotel. That doesn’t make it any less inconvenient for you by any means, and I apologize that your stay was disrupted by the construction. We hope you will come back and stay with us again in the future when this project is completed to see another part of history once again preserved for the future generations.

This beautiful historic hotel is located just 2 blocks from Millenium Park, 2 blocks from Michigan Avenue and a short bus or taxi ride to The Natural History Museum, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium. The concierge is very helpful in orienting you to transportation options and all the attractions available. The hotel has "old elegance" but is updated in ways that the modern traveler demands.

Room Tip: We were on the side of the hotel that faces the "L" that comes every 10 minutes or so but...

Just spent the week-end at the Palmer House, on the recommendation of a colleague, and it was a great change from the Hyatt and Marriott airport hotels I stayed in during my trip.
As I was on a budget, I booked the standard room, which was really small for American standard and with a view to the inner courtyard. However the rooms are renovated with style, very clean with great attention to detail. Although it is evident that you sleep in a piece of history, this hotel is well worth it, as all you can enjoy all the modern amenities. For breakfast I would recommend the diner next door, as due to the massive number of rooms ( more than 1600) and guests; you might want to find a quieter corner. The lobby bar in the evening is a great meeting point, with a certain feeling of Milan railway station buzz and amazing ceiling decoration. Superb Art Deco style and conserved architecture, make this hotel so unique.
Location is great, enabling you to visit the downtown area by foot, with shopping, art, and parks around the corner.
Remember parking in the hotel does not come cheap , a bit over USD 40 per day, but access is just around, outside of the hotel for self-parking.
I would probably book the executive room next time, but overall an unforgettable stay. There is plenty of good restaurants around the hotel, so I would rather opt for that option, rather than eating in the crowded hotel facilities.
If you like however to get back in time but still enjoy modern comfort, the Palmer House is difficult to beat , at such a price.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are small, try to avoid the inner court yard view
