“Just Okay nothing Special”
Reviewed April 4, 2010

The staff was extremely friendly and had personality which is great. However the main problem I had was that the drapes didnt close all the way and the bright yellow lights from outside came into the room all night. I tried to watch the Yoga channel which only went 4 minutes then rewinded itself from the beginng over and over. It seemed like everything had an additional charge I was suprised that the Toilet Paper didnt cost extra. I question the hotel security because as soon as we walked out the door of the hotel 4 bums where in out grill asking us from money and for us to buy them cig's. I dont like people touching my wife and the Hotel should have security making it a safe enviroment for its guests. The bed was comfortable the pillows where great but bathtub and shower looked very cheap like a motel 6 and everytime I walked in my room we where unable to park to unload because the taxi cabs prevented us from being able to unload our car.

Stayed at the Hotel Monaco March 20-24, Room 1118. Most everything was up to Kimpton's usual high standards, but this room had a really awful view (with a window seat) of the brick wall of the adjacent building to the east. Avoid this room, though I suppose the upside is that you won't hear the screeching el train from this side of the building.

I have to agree with just about all of the positive comments here. The staff is top-notch - friendly and helpful. The location is super - convenient to both Michigan Ave. and State St. shopping (but keep in mind that sales tax - a whopping 10.25%!), Millennium Park , and public transportation. Hotel is clean and well-maintained.

We did, however, have some concerns about the room - it looked good, and the beds were fine. BUT - the only storage space other than the closet was a large nightstand with three drawers - neither adequate nor convenient for anything more than a very short stay. Their was not enough lighting (one small table lamp on the very small table/desk, on lamp on the nightstand, and a not-too-large overhead light in the entry hallway near the closet - no general lighting in the main area), and no light in the closet. There was no full-length mirror anywhere in the room. The picture on the TV was really sub-par, but that really wasn't much of an issue because there was nothing on - I have never seen such a limited selection of channels in an upscale hotel. Even taken together all of these issues were not much more than an annoyance, since we spent very little time in the room, but they were disappointing, and resulted in the lower rating for the room.

One other issue - the hotel is 1/2 block from one of the corners of the "Loop" elevated rail station, and at night you can hear the squealing when the trains come around the curve. We were on the 8th floor facing Wabash, so this wasn't a bother, but we could tell it was there, and it might be an issue if one was on a lower floor.

Join the Kimpton "rewards" program for free internet. Good signal.

With a great location down town, proximity to the "L" and major attractions, and great service this hotel made our stay in Chicago memorable.

We stayed at The Hotel Monaco between 3/13 and 3/18. Got in on a Saturday morning fairly early and did not expect a room to be ready (which it wasn’t.) However, after taking our luggage, the front-desk asked for our cell number, so we could go out and explore the city and get called when our room was ready.
We reserved the most basic room with no extras. The room we got was very nice, roomy and clean, with a basic bathroom. Maybe not the Ritz but also not a small tin can room you find in most city hotels. The bed was super comfy with nice bedding and the large flat screen that pivoted to the seating area was great. A note about house cleaning: our room was always in great shape and clean, furthermore, since we stayed in the room longer than most of the business travelers, our housekeeper took extra care with our room, leaving us fun towel sculptures A la Cruise ship, which just made it fun to come back to the room every day. One day, on my wife’s birthday, she made a three tier birthday cake, and on another she left us a gift card to a local coffee shop so we could get our fill of caffeine. It might all sound silly but how many hotels have given you such attention lately or any company for that matter!! The Front desk helped with all our issues, faxing and sending some work papers, printing boarding passes, and helping with reservations.
Every evening the hotel would host wine and canapé reception for an hour, and we tried to make it back around that time to get ready for dinner. It was great meeting the manager hosting the reception, getting tips and suggestions from the concierge, and just getting to rest a bit. They served wines, Hot Toddy’s and hot chocolate and some nice pizza from the kitchen.
The hotel is dog friendly which might have made us a bit apprehensive to book if we knew in advanced. However, they limit the dogs to the lower floors and we didn’t see or have any problems with pets.
In all, the hotel was very enjoyable. The staff was professional, accommodating, and just downright wonderful!
P.S. speaking of pets, opt to have a gold fish in your room, it makes all the difference.

Booked for $99 a night and stayed two nights with friends. Short cab ride from Union Station. Loved the wine hour from 5-6 and fresh coffee in the morning. Room was overlooking the street. Short walk to the river. Will be back!

We got a spanking deal at this hotel for $99 a night. It's in a good location to the Loop. Excellent transportation options abound. My gripe comes from the fact that we were obviously put in a "crappy" room. It overlooked the back of the building and the roof of a building next to us. The toilet in the room was not bolted to the floor.

Other than that, if I needed to stay in the Loop again for something and I knew I wasn't going to be put in a undesirable room, I would stay here again.

Dear Venice4504,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your comments about your recent trip to the Hotel Monaco. While I never enjoy reading that we were not able to make a guest truly comfortable I appreciate your feedback. Our goal is to create fantastic memories for our guests and it is so important for us to know when we may not meet this expectation so that we can make the necessary changes to ensure it does not happen again.

As a hotel in downtown Chicago we have views that overlook the Chicago River and downtown Chicago and rooms that overlook the surrounding buildings. Depending upon what room type you book may depend upon where your room is located. Price is not always the determining factor and in fact we only place our guests in the best rooms that are available at the time you check in.

Understanding that your visit was not as you ahd hoped, please feel free to contact me personally for your next trip to Chicago. I would truly enjoy overseeing your next reservation to ensure your stay is perfect.

Thank you again.
