“Superb hotel”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

I always try to stay at Kimpton hotels whenever I can. I had a great experience at the Seattle Kimpton and possibly an ever better experience at the Kimpton Monaco Chicago. Beautiful room, great shower & bath supplies, excellent gym facilities, and FREE wifi. Needless to say, I also love the free coffee in the morning and free wine at night. Everything about the Kimpton Monaco feels the opposite of the normal "nickel and dimed" experience at most hotel chains. The Kimpton staff goes out of the way to make you feel relaxed and pampered.

Room Tip: I was very happy with the standard King room. Didn't see any reason to upgrade.

Recently stayed for 1 night and couldn't book my next stay there fast enough.

I was coming in for a one night visit and wasn't sure what to expect. From the moment I arrived the front desk treated me warmly and asked if there was anything I needed. I was directed to my room - a beautiful suite overlooking the Chicago River to the west (see photo) - and had my inner circle amenity waiting for me.

The room was well appointed with fantastic window seats to relax on, people/city watch, or do work. Overall, just a great property with great staff.

I had another trip to Chicago coming up the following week and had not booked a room yet. It took me all of about 5 minutes to select the Monaco again. Looking forward to returning.

Dear Hmbrglar -

So glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay, and your Inner Circle preferences were executed as expected! The views from those river view Mediterranean suites are pretty amazing, and we've made sure that you'll have the same one next stay. Thank you for the great review.

We stayed at the Hotel Monaco for one night and it was so great I'm looking for an excuse to go back! We had booked our reservation (one room for four people) ages ago, and called the day of to see if an upgrade was available. And it was! Our room (#815) had 2 great window seats and the windows faced the river. The decor was gorgeous, the beds were great, there was a fantastic little chaise in the room, the bathroom was large, and did I mention the window seats?? We missed the wine hour the night we arrived, but did take advantage of the free Starbucks coffee in the morning. The attached restaurant (South Water Kitchen) was a great breakfast stop.

The beds were really comfortable, although the pillows weren't great.

The great thing, too, was that by signing up to be a Kimpton InTouch (I think that's what it was called) member, we got free in-room wifi AND a $10 mini-bar credit.

The location of the hotel is wonderful. Just across Wacker is the river and then North Michigan Avenue. To the south is the whole theater district, a block or two over is State Street shopping...it was perfect.

Parking was a little steep, I thought, even for downtown Chicago - $56 a night. They did have in and out privileges, which is nice. We parked in the same garage the hotel uses, but just paid them directly because if you go through the hotel, you pay $56 a have to be out by 2pm the day of check out. We were going to see a 2pm show the day we checked out, so we would've had to pay extra. But we arrived at around 7pm and just paid the parking garage the $56 directly for 24 hours of parking. So we saved ourselves a little bit of money...

Overall, this is a great place to stay!

Room Tip: See if you can get one with a window seat.

Dear crazysox4 -

Wow, what a lovely review to read! We're honored that we've moved into the top spot on your list of places to stay in Chicago, and we're happy to help you come up with some great excuses to come visit us again. The window seats, especially in those rooms are a great reason, and so is the wine hour you missed! Hopefully you get a chance to come see us in the Chicago springtime, we'll be thrilled to host you again.

Cheers,

We stayed here for my husband's birthday and New Years Eve. We had a river view room (recommend) and we thought the room was beautifully decorated and spacious. I appreciated the unique Kimpton touches (leopard print robes and yoga mat in the room) and the location was perfect (easy walk to Miracle Mile, across the river from Trump Towers). The service was great and we have no complaints!

We thoroughly enjoyed being right in the heart of Chicago. We came to Chicago for the taping of 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me' radio show, and loved our room and the 5-6 pm free wine happy hour for guests! Ask for a window seat room and a high floor with a river view - we loved it and the staff was wonderful! Lot's of choices in Chicago, and I've tried a few, but this one was a nice, cozy place in a great location! (Got a discount through TripAdvisor, which helped too)

Room Tip: River view, window seat, high floor

Dear DaveBMinnesota,

Thanks for making us your home when you came in for 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me'. Hopefully, you enjoyed the show just as much as your stay. The river views and window seats are some of our best perks, and of course the wine hour doesn't hurt, we're glad you got to enjoy them all during your stay. We appreciate the great review, and look forward to having you back!

Everything was truly perfect. Great central location right off Michigan Ave. By Trump Tower. The staff is fabulous. They have a nice restaurant and bar. The rooms are VERY comfortable and the window seat is cute idea. My lone complaint is trivial...one must call for room service for morning coffee. Truly my only gripe.

Room Tip: Absolutely get a room facing Wacker, the river & trump tower.

Hi DaBaronVH -

Thanks for the review, and we're happy to hear that you would recommend us. Our staff loves what they do, and we're glad that you were able to experience that as well as our location & window seats. While our room service team is happy to take a coffee order in the morning, we also have Keurig machines that we can send up to the room when you arrive. On your next stay, just let us know at check-in and you'll be all set!

I've stayed at Monacos in Portland and Philadelphia, both probably my favorites among many other outstanding Kimpton properties, so my expectations were high - and I was not disappointed.

Great staff, comfortable and stylish rooms, convenient location, and all the little special touches the Kimpton brand offers make stays at these hotels something to look forward to - even to attend a conference you don't much enjoy in a frigid city in the middle of an arctic freeze.

I love getting my morning NY Times, having the option for a glass of wine at 5, and the generally lively (the mood is best expressed in Spanish: alegre) feeling the hotel (staff, decor, etc.) evokes.

Located pretty much at the foot of Chicago's miracle mile and near all kinds of attractions (better enjoyed in a month other than january).

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere but the food doesn't live up to that of the Monaco in Philadelphia (which is especially memorable). But it's pretty good - and a necessary amenity when going outside is an uninviting option.

Highly recommended place to stay in downtown Chicago.

Dear profegringo,

We're glad you added Chicago to your list of Monaco visits...and hopefully to your favorites! It sounds like you had the unfortunate luck of being here for a conference during the lovely weather spell we had just recently, but I'm glad to hear you still enjoyed your stay. True, our location is much better when walking the city is a viable option, but between wine hour & SouthWater Kitchen, you used your indoor time well! Hopefully you get a chance to come visit us again soon, hopefully with a little warmer weather!

Cheers,
