The Hotel Monaco was wonderful. We had a Mediterranean Suite, which featured an enormous living room with pull out couch, desk, chair and flat screen TV and an enormous bedroom with king bed, chair, sitting area and another flat screen television. The bathroom was spacious with a very deep 2-person whirlpool tub and free-standing shower (the shower could be a touch bigger, though, it's tough to shave in there!). My favorite part about the room was the window seats - these were at least 3' deep with lovely cushions and was a great place to perch and watch the river or read a book.

Complimentary wireless internet was great. Housekeeping was really friendly - as was all of the hotel's staff.

We got the suite at 50% off because of a Travelzoo sale, and I can't believe our luck. We were so spoiled - it really raised the bar for our hotel standards!

It was convenient to the El train (which you can hear a bit, but it doesn't bother you) - just a block away. The river is also right there, and a handful of blocks from Millenium Park - just a great location.

A group of girls and I were celebrating a friend's bachelorette party and stayed at the Hotel Monaco for one evening. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. I thought it was neat, each person who works in the hotel puts their favorite food underneath their name on their nametag! Funny! I was wondering why the man who checked me in had Mac N Cheese under his name! We had 4 girls in a room and we all slept very comfortably. The beds were great! I thought it was decorated very nicely and very clean. We had cocktails in the bar while we were waiting to go out and we found the bartender also very friendly. The food from the restaurant smelled wonderful! The location is great, although we are all from Chicago so we weren't really going to the sites. They have a fish in a fishbowl in all of the rooms, which is interesting. So glad that the fish survived with us rowdy girls coming back at 2 a.m.!

We booked through the Kimpton website and got what we felt was a very good rate: $159 for a room with a view of the river. Parking is $40 per day. Since we were only there for one night, we did not investigate whether there might be less expensive alternatives. Due to construction in front of the entrance (about which we were unfortunately not warned when we called to ask about parking), we were unable to find the valet. We looped around the buliding and pulled into a garage which turned out to be the correct one for the hotel. A bit stressful to deal with during rush hour traffic, but that was a minor flaw in an otherwise wonderful stay.

We walked up to the hotel and were greeted by a very pleasant doorman and front desk staff. The smiling desk clerk noted our Kimpton In Touch preferences (high floor, good view, down pillows) and assured us they had been met. (They were.) Went up to our room (didn't bother with the bellman) on the 12th floor and were treated to an excellent view of Marina City and the Mies van der Rohe IBM building. The room was very quiet (both day and night) in spite of the hotel being in the thick of things (one block from Michigan Avenue and a short walk to Millennium Park). The room was not large (not surprising for the price and location) but was of more than ample size for the two of us. As others have commented, the gigantic window with the cushioned window seat was spectacular and made the room seem bigger than it was. One caveat, however: The window seat is very high; you have to climb onto it. While not a problem for us, I imagine this is something many people would not be able to do. (Of course, you can still enjoy the view, even if you can't reach the seat.) The very picky may have been bothered by the frayed curtains (presumably caused by pulling on them to open and close them instead of using the attached pull stick) but the were not very noticable and the rest of the room was well-decorated and did not appear worn out. A few minutes later, there was a knock on our door, and a bottle of water and cookies were delivered, along with a welcome note and a coupon for 15% off breakfast in the adjacent restaurant. (Again, this is part of the Kimpton In Touch program. You merely have to sign up and book through their website. You do not need a minimum number of stays.)

We did not want to wait around for the complimentary wine reception from 5 to 6 so I cannot comment on that. When we got back from a few hours of walking around, our bed had been turned down with chocolates on the pillow, the ice bucket was filled and placed on the nightstand, and the TV was playing relaxing music. Unnecessary, of course, but fun.

The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was small, but nice-looking and very clean. The fitness room was very small but high-quality with two Precor elliptical machines, two treadmills, a bike, an exercise mat, free weights, bottled water, and towels.

Dinner at the hotel restaurant, South Water Kitchen, was very good, albeit not spectacular, and the service was excellent. Room service breakfast was expensive (as it is everywhere), was not great but quite good, and was delivered promptly at the requested time.

Check out was easy. We had to wait approximately10 minutes for our car, which didn't seem too bad considering it was 9 am on a Friday morning.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Hotel is located in perfect location, 2min work to train station, less than 5min work to the river for boat tour. The room we stayed in was simple but very clean with nice decoration and had a huge tv & comfortable bed. Why you pay more for hotels close by when you can get everything you need at hotel monaco and it's cheaper!! the restaurant down stairs had excellent food, too.
We travel all over the world, and we're picky. We enjoyed our stay.

I stay at Kimpton Hotels when I can because they continually deliver a great experience for business and personal travel. The Monaco in downtown Chicago (on Wabash) continues to live up to my expectations for a Kimpton.

The hotel is centrally located for business trips or site seeing.

The front desk staff is helpful and can provide direction on how to get to point B. They are also responsive to requests to make the stay more enjoyable.

There is also free wireless access here...which is nice when one is traveling on the personal budget...I HATE paying $20 to access the web from a hotel...which is not the case here!

Check out my blog for further detail about the hotel and site seeing recommendations...

We booked ourselves an anniversary weekend at the Kimpton Hotel Burnham, but for some reason the room wasn't ready at 11pm when we arrived, so they quickly sent us to their sister hotel, the Monaco, for the night into a "sweet suite", cab fare included and they picked up the tab for the night. Fantastic service, friendly and accommodating. We loved the room, the view and the beautiful, funky furnishings. It was a pleasure...then back to the Hotel Burnham in the morning for another excellent stay in a beautiful room with wonderful service from bed turn-down to chocolates, soft music on the radio and bathrobes on the bed awaiting us after a long evening out sightseeing. The clean, appointed rooms were a nice plus for these weary travelers who usually stay in middle of the road places. Highly recommend the Kimpton chain...both the Burnham and Monaco.

This is the fanciest hotel I've ever stayed at. After spending 6 months overseas, my then fiance met me in Chicago, and we had Christmas here. The room, bed, picture window with inset seat, bathroom were huge. All decor was new and lovely. Wide range of electronics and bathrobes and all the comforts of home. The valet parking wasn't great, as the dude was unhappy when he brought the wrong car and punched out a vent in our car, but the front desk reimbursed our mighty pricey parking fees for the stay. We were in heaven and the hotel was great. It was clean as well...I'm a bit OCD when it comes to cleanliness.
