We enjoyed the history of the building and its great location. Rooms were clean and hotel very quiet for sleeping. My only complaint would be the hotel restaurant which had poor service (both dinner and lunch) with the exception of breakfast which was excellent. On checkout I was told that I could not use my Kimpton $10 coupon for the bar, because I allowed them to seat me on the patio to have a drink!! I was offered the seat when I went into the bar and showed my coupon and the patio was deserted! Considering the cost of staying here, I thought this was unacceptable! After a "discussion" the man at the desk agreed to credit by bill for the $10. Stay here if you want to experience Chicago's history and eat at the Atwood Cafe only if you can't resist the atmosphere (which is lovely)

Stunning "old school" hotel in a historic district-style area of downtown Chicago. Extremely well appointed rooms, lounges, reception area, etc. with excellent service to match. Location is very convenient if you are visiting the Loop. Walking distance to the Willis (Sears) tower for sightseers.

Room Tip: Watch for deals on Hotel Tonight if you are planning a trip to this area

This hotel was designed by Daniel Burnham, which was used to be an office building but now converted to a boutique hotel operated by Kimpton.

The location is unbeatable. It is less than one block from the blue line from O"Hare; the stop is "Washington". And maybe 2 blocks from the orange line coming from Mid-way. There were a lot of shopping with 1-2 blocks such as Macy, Nordstorm Rack, Target, H&M, TJ Max, etc. IT is also 2-3 blocks from the Millenium Park.

The room was comfortable and decent size. I had a room on the 5 Floor overseeing State Street. Rooms on higher floor could have a view of the Park and Lake.

There is a happy hour from 5-6 pm everyday; the hotel would serve complimentary red and white wines. They also serve complimentary coffee and tea in the morning.

If you are a member of their loyalty program, the wifi is complimentary too. It is worth joining.

My only complaint is the exercise room. It was small and required a bit of tender loving care.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floor facing State street to get a view of the Park and the Lake

The Burnham is a nice hotel, with an old fashion style. The service is excellent - helpful and attentive. We had some sort of an lake view from our room in the 8th floor. The room was bigger than many hotel rooms in the US.

The wine hour from 5 to 6 in the afternoon is excellent.

Highly recommended.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful review on Tripadvisor. It sounds like you had a great weekend. The rooms are a nice size to be in the city and the lake view really helps. As someone with a weird anachronistic crush on Daniel Burnham, I adore this hotel. In the lovingly renovated Reliance Building (Burnham, Root, & Atwood, ca. 1895) and perfectly located at the corner of Washington and State, catty-corner from the old Marshall Field's (Burnham & Co, ca. 1897). Request a room on one of the higher floors to see the restored staircase (also visible from the elevator lobby), and to see the rooms with the restored frosted-glass office doors.

The hotel is steps from the blue line (straight shot to O'Hare), the red line and the L. It's 2 blocks to Millennium Park and the Chicago Theater. Kimpton has done a great job with this property, and if you're a Kimpton fan, you'll love it here even if you've never heard of Daniel Burnham. But you should look him up. ;)

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the more historic features have been preserved (office doors, staircase).

Dear Lori D,

Wow..... You know your history and it's all correct! Daniel Burnham and his architects (Atwood & Root) were the best in their time. The Rookery Building, Union Station Washington, DC, Science and Industry Museum, Marshfield's and our course the Reliance Building can Nerver be recreated. These men were genius and very proud that Chicago has this amazing architecture to display to the world. Thank you for being a loyal guest of the Hotel Burnham we would love to have you with us again soon. Thanks for sharing your experience on Tripadvisor.

Absolutely outstanding, phenomenal experience. Best stay ever in downtown Chicago!! Jon Luc was over the top on helpful. This was our 41st wedding anniversary and the entire staff went way out of their way to make our celebration extra special...upgraded to the executive suite, red rose arrangement on the desk, a heart in Hershey kisses on the bed and a card from the staff wishing us a happy anniversary. How cool is that?? Help with getting into a sold out Musical ( Motown -- highly recommend it!!) and great tips on evening dining. This was a trip we will never forget. We will definitely be back soonest!!

We stayed at the Burnham for three nights and we absolutely loved it there. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome. The concierge, Jean-Luc, was exceptional. He welcomed us and helped us plan out our days. He was very friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed.

The staff met my request to be upgraded to a historic floor. This is a must-do if you choose to stay here, which you should. The whole hotel is full of ornate historic detail. From the lobby to the elevator shafts and the original staircase...it is truly stunning. On the historic floor, we had an original door with actual keys. This was so charming. Our room was #1201 and we had a spectacular view of the city, and a peek-a-boo view of the lake. The room was small but sufficient. We did not hear any noise from the street...only some late-night noise by the elevators but even that was minimal.

Given the proximity of the hotel, we were able to walk to almost everything. We were able to walk to Millennium Park, the lakefront, the river, and all of our now favorite restaurants (Chicago Cut Steakhouse, The Purple Pig).

This hotel is worth the cost. Their service, nightly complementary wine hour for guests and location are the best. We wouldn't think of staying anywhere else when we return.

Room Tip: Splurge for an upgrade to an upper historic floor, you won't regret it.
