“Weekend at the Burnham (Lyric Opera)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

We stayed overnight because we had 2 operas in a row and drive in from Milwaukee. We had to modify our reservation to accomadate another friend who drove down with us and the front desk was very helpful with the change even though they were full. We left the car in the parking garage and Julio (and his father who was helping with parking) were also very accomadting with holding the car a little later and not charging us more after the opera, so we didn't have to move to another garage. Also a block from the Art Institute, so we were able to walk over before the opera on Sunday.

Room Tip: The 2nd floor actually turned out to be very convenient-their is an elevator next to the front desk...

We travelled for a short stay in Chicago, Nov.15-18, 2012. I am retired, but my wife had meetings with a professional group in the city. We stayed at the Hotel Burnham. We had stayed in different areas of Chicago on previous visits, and every area has it's own highlights nearby.

We were across the corner from what was Marshall Field, now Macys, not far from the Magnificant Mile. Out the door you could see the Pritzner Pavilion, part of Millenium Park, which is steps away from Cloud Gate, the giant stainless steel "jelly bean."

As a runner, I could get to the running/biking/walking path along Lake Michican. Tricky to get to at first, because not every roadway or sidewalk will take you there directly. Once you find the way(s), it's a snap.

Some of the great museums, like the Art Institute are within walking distance.
The hotel itself is like going back in time. It is beatifully well kept, with dark wood and what looks like wrought iron in the lobby area. THere was no coffee in the room, but you could get it downstairs very early in the morning. I would throw something appropriate on and make my way down stairs before my run.

I did find that the food and drink at the Burnham were very expensive, something I did expect in the city. We spent in excess of $70 for breakfast for 2, which consisted of wheat toast, oatmeal, fruit, yougurt, juice, and coffee/tea. A bit much, wouldn't you say? Dunkin' Donuts down the street provided me (alone) almost the same for under $10.

Overall, I felt the Burnham was great, with a truly friendly, helpful staff, from the doormen to the desk, plus....everyone. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: This is not the tallest building, but request some sort of view. We could see the Christmas decorati...

Have been trying to stay here for awhile and finally decided to drive up in
the winter when rates are a bit lower. What a triumph. This architectural masterpiece was fantastic. The rooms are incredible and the history is amazing. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone--whether just coming to Chicago for any tourist purpose or to enjoy the building itself. This hotel is tucked down in the Loop on bustling State Street which is usually quieter than North Michigan Avenue but it is worth staying here. There are EL trains nearby and cabs are plentiful. Had a nice lunch at the Atwater Grill as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking State Street

Wanted to do something different/special this trip into Chicago, and the Hotel Burnham was just that. Upgraded to an outstanding suite on the top floor, one of the nicest rooms we have ever had. Staff was attentive, providing a humidifier, and champagne to acknowledge our event. A bit pricey, but well worth it for a special occasion.

On first impressions I was wowed by this hotel, it is a beautiful old building with lots of art deco features throughout. The lobbies, lifts and even the room doors were lovely hints of art deco style. The bed was very comfortable and the room pleasant and clean.

The location is just perfect too, walking distance to the Arts Institute, the park and just across the road from Macy's.

Brunch in the restaurant downstairs was fantastic!

The only problem with this hotel was that my room was right above some sort of generator which made noise all night long, so unfortunately I did not sleep well. Wouldn't put me off coming back though.

Room Tip: I imagine higher rooms have less noise.

I love me a great Kimpton hotel, and this one did not disappoint. From Emil at the front desk to Vane, who brought our luggage upstairs, to Tonya, the GM, to the restaurant staff, everyone treated me and my friend like, well, old friends...very important old friends! I was given great walking directions and some impressive dining recommendations. The room was comfortable and looked out toward the Chicago and Oriental theaters, which was fun! The building itself is charming and gorgeous and I just love the ornate design on the lobby level floor and the stairwell. Even the jam at breakfast was awesome!

If you're looking to stay in the Loop, I would highly recommend this hotel! I can't wait to visit again.
