In late September, we returned to Chicago and wanted to stay in the downtown area. We found the hotel Burnham. It’s a small boutique hotel. We had never heard of the Kimpton chain and were very impressed with its philosophy. The staff was very friendly. The location is a little further than what we wanted, but the accommodations made up for it.

It’s an older hotel with lots of dark mahogany wood. The décor is very nice and appropriate for the style and age of the hotel. There’s a small sitting area with cozy chairs. There’s a nightly wine hour in the lobby. We had a room on the second floor. You can hear some noise (fire trucks, ambulance, etc.), but it wasn’t that bad. Keep in mind that you are in the heart of the city. The room was gorgeous with very high ceilings and large windows. There is free internet access in the room. There’s also a convenient in-room safe. The bath products were also amazing. Usually, hotel shampoo and conditioner are not worthy enough to wash your socks! This is not the case at the Burnham. We experienced some rainy weather while in Chicago. Fortunately, the hotel provides an umbrella in every room. Very convenient!!

Positives:
Everything. The mattress and bedding was so comfortable. The room is a little small, but this is an older hotel. However, you didn’t feel stifled thanks to the high ceilings.

Negative:
None truly. The location is a slight negative. It just depends on what activities you plan on doing.

Overall, a great hotel with excellent service and amenities. The cost is a little high, but if you are able to splurge a little, it’s well worth it.

Room Tip: A higher floor if you're a light sleeper.

My husband, brother-in-law, and I spent this past week-end (two nights/two rooms) at the Burnham Hotel in downtown Chicago. I selected this hotel after viewing its website and reading about their pet policy. This hotel allows well-behaved dogs of any size to stay--something many/most nicer hotels will not permit.

Upon check-in, we were warmly greeted and the staff welcomed our two dogs that we brought with us. A few hours after we checked-in and went down to the lobby to take the dogs for a walk, we noticed their neat "VIP Pet" chalkboard where they surprised us by entering in our two dogs' names (a thoughtful, unexpected gesture). Tyrell (the name of either the bell boy or the door man?) was very professional and helpful, also.

This hotel features a wine reception from 5-6 PM each night, so we brought the dogs down for this on our way to take them out for another walk. The sitting area/"living room" where the reception is held is a bit small, so was pretty cramped. We'd recommend getting their early if you expect to sit down; they featured one red and one white complimentary wines.

The concierge staff at this property really went the extra mile for us--(lady with dark hair/dark eye glasses-sorry I do not remember your name?) and Emil were great. The woman concierge was very helpful in suggesting nearby restaurants for us. She found us the BEST Thai restaurant about a 10-minute walk from the hotel (Star of Siam). This place had a HUGE menu, great service, fair prices, and probably the best Thai food we've had anywhere.

Amenity-wise, this hotel has a nice fairly small on-site restaurant and bar. We did not utilize these when visiting as wanted to experience as much of downtown Chicago as we could on this trip. The hotel is 100+ years old and the remodeled building has gone out of its way to retain the original ambiance/character of the hotel (great marble floors, mosaic tiles, metal wrought iron grillwork elevators, etc. We did not utilize the on-site fitness room as got plenty of exercise walking the dogs and just touring the area.

Our rooms were on the 2nd floor which was ideal in getting the dogs down to the lobby area, to go outside for walks. The nearest grassy park area is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, just before you reach Millenium Park. Our rooms were what we expected--smaller than newer hotels but offer a lot more character (huge nearly floor to ceiling windows, excellent heavy drapes that entirely closed out the lighting to allow for great sleeping!), very comfortable bed w/ duvet, small but nicely appointed bathroom, plush towels. The closet featured two animal-print decadent robes but we did not take advantage of these. Our rooms were quiet as far as neighboring rooms' noise but being on the 2nd floor (closer to the street level) does make for more noise (the "L" train nearby visits about every half hour or so but you kind of get used to it after a while). Margarita, our chambermaid, was very attentive and friendly.

This hotel also has available its "goldfish" free loaner program where if you miss your pets, you can request the staff to bring a simple goldfish bowl w/ live fish to your hotel room. We requested this at check-in, and within an hour, these were brought up for us. We recommend your signing up for Kimpton's "In Touch" member program (free) that entitles you to free wifi and a $10/room mini bar allowance.

Another thing we really liked about this property was that the door men and front desk staff were actually friendly in a genuine way. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel. We look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Choose a higher-floor room if you want more quiet. Select a lower-floor room if you bring dogs that will need to be walked... Be sure to sign-up for the free "In Touch" member program to get its perks.

The Burnham is best described as a luxury boutique hotel. The building was designed by the noted Chicago architect, Daniel Burnham in the 1890's. From arrival to departure, the staff was attentive and always ready to provide assistance be it directions, transportation or simply information. They truly unstood the importance of customer service. We worked with the conceriege via email to make dinner arrangements...excellent suggestions and responses to our desire to see a variety of restaurant styles and menus. Can't provide enought platitudes for her quick responses. As an aside, the Atwood Cafe within the hotel, is execellent. The location of the hotel in downtown Chicago is absolutely perfect. A person can easily walk to Millenium Park and Michigan Ave.and the Loop. Both Red and Blue CTA lines are within 50 yds. of the hotel. When we return to Chicago, my wife and I will return to the Burnham.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above sixth floor preferably facing north.

This was my 1st stay at the Hotel Burnham and 4th stay with Kimpton Hotels. It was amazing. The employees were very attentive to my needs, used my first name, and always had the best smiles on their faces. It did not matter if I was speaking with someone in the restaurant, getting on a elevator, conference serving, speaking with one of the housekeeping staff, the front desk attendant or the gentleman out-front opening my car door everyone was AMAZING! The location in Chicago is perfect for shopping, awesome food selections, close to the water and just walking around. Even walked to the Navy Pier one afternoon! My room was very comfy and just beautiful with very high ceilings. The building itself had such a historic feeling as well. I felt as if I was stepping back in time when I walked up to the elevator with it cage like surrounding. I highly recommend for your future trip!!!!

Room Tip: I did not use the swimming or spa facilities

My husband, brother-in-law, and I made our first visit to the Burnham Chicago for a two-night, two-room stay to tour the city. I had called prior to check-in and after reviewing the very helpful website re the hotel's pet policy. It was refreshing to find this property that accepted our two dogs (both very well-behaved!) with as much grace as its people guests were given.

We stayed in rooms #203 and #208--being on the 2nd floor even though a bit noisy w/ city noises (and the Loop train's frequent passing-by/nothing the hotel could have prevented) but made total sense for our visit as we were traveling with the children, er dogs and this made for an easier quick walk outside to take them to the park in front of the Millinium Park an easy five-to ten minute walk each way from the property. Our rooms were well-appointed and we had no issues of any kind with the furnishing, nice drapery that actually did its job (totally blocked out any light from the large windows so facilitated great sleeping!). Our floor was very quiet (so appreciated when traveling).

We did not dine at the Atwood on premise as wanted to sample other restaurants throughout the city. The two concierge staff I spoke with (a wonderful female w/ dark glasses-sorry cannot remember name!) + Emil) gave us extremely professional and friendly service. We requested one fish bowl for my brother-in-law's room and it was brought up within an hour of our check-in (not bad).

The doormen were very gracious and 99% of the time did open doors for us, especially appreciated when we were walking the dogs. Our check-in and check-out went smoothly, and our rooms were fine (sure, not as large as maybe newer hotels, but we'd trade room size in a heartbeat to stay at a one-of-a-kind historical property with so much character. The bellman who handled our luggage was also professional and polite.

The In-Touch membership did award us the nice $10/room mini bar credit which was appreciated. We only visited the 5-6 PM Evening Wine Reception the first night of our stay... a little limited wine selection (I think there was only one red and one white?) and light munchies might have been a nice touch. We did not utilize the fitness room as did plenty of walking around the city on our own.

Overall, we would definitely return to the Burnham Chicago and would also highly recommend it for travelers with very well behaved pets (understandably any nice property would not want to become a "zoo" with pets in every room/we saw only one or two other small dogs during our whole visit). A final totally unexpected but much appreciated (and fun!) touch was for the staff to have written our kinder's names (Gabriel and Cricket) on the little pet chalkboard announcing "VIP" guests. The front entrance also featured a metal two-dish dog feeder w/ several dog biscuits at all times but no water which would have been good.

Room Tip: Definitely stay on the 2nd/lower floors if traveling with pets needing to be walked outside.... A fun idea for the hotel to consider offering would be to feature a quick optional 10-minute "tour" of the property for first-time visitors if desired, to acquaint guests with the wonderful history, etc.
