“Contemporary Luxury in a Historic Setting.”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed at the Hotel Burnham in downtown Chicago last fall and really enjoyed the location close to the Magnificent Mile, the theatre and shopping districts, the Art Institute, the waterfront park and transportation. The Reliance Building has been renovated into a Boutique Hotel, but has kept its former charm and historic details such as the staircase, the elevator doors, the tiled floors and a fireplace in the lobby. Our room was not large but was very comfortable and was beautifully decorated. The bathroom was quite small but functioned well enough and had Aveda products. There was a mini bar, flat screen TV, internet access, plenty of space for clothes and an iron and ironing board as well as a coffee maker. The front desk service was excellent and there is complimentary wine from 5 to 6 pm and coffee in the mornings. The Atwood Cafe in the hotel was lovely for dinner as well as breakfast with a gourmet menu and very good service. We were able to visit Oak Park by car (though you can use the transit system) and there are many good restaurants close by the hotel. The River Cruise, which winds through the city, is definitely worthwhile though it can be windy in the open boat so try to go on a sunny day in cooler weather. The hotel is a bit expensive, even by big city standards, but offers good value and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to explore Chicago on foot or go further out by taxi.

Room Tip: A higher floor is a good idea for a city view and if you don't want to be cramped ask for a king...

We stayed Friday afternoon 9-21-12 to Sunday morning, 9-22-12.
The hotel is very nice and clean. Darnell checked us in, he was full of information for us on our first stay at Hotel Burnham. They offer lemon infused water, which was pretty good. In the mornings they also have Starbucks coffee. Our room was ready for us early so that was nice.
Our maid (who for the life of me I can't remember her name) was wonderful and left us a handwritten note as I'm sure she leaves for everyone but it was nice to have that personal touch. Our room was clean and we had plenty of linens. She even wrapped up the cords we had laying around for our flat irons, hair dryers, phones etc. It was definitely the extra mile.

The Atwood Cafe is right there off the lobby area, we didn't eat here but it looked very cozy and quite quaint. A little on the dark side but the whole hotel seemed that way with the dark colors and use of iron decor. The mosaics are the floors were pretty. If you go up to floors 8 to the top they use the old office doors, that was worth the picture. The stairwell needs some fixing, if you use the stairs from the lobby, once you get out of view it's quite depressing, in need of fixing up. As you get higher on the floors to where the stairs are in view of the elevator they are nice again. Not something that won't get me to stay there again but I imagine it would go a long way if they'd fix the middle floors stairwell. When we first used the stairs (via the 4th floor) we thought we were going somewhere we shouldn't.

The bed was very comfy. We had 3 people in our room and we had plenty of room to move about, though I will say the rooms are on the smaller side. We were on the side facing State Street. I loved sitting on the ledge of our semi bay window with a great view down the block. Also slept very well! I am from the country where the only loud sounds at night are the neighbor's dogs barking so I was somewhat afraid that I wouldn't sleep much on this trip. The only time I was woken up by loud noises was a fire truck coming by. Didn't hear any traffic. We were next door to the elevator and even that didn't bother us. The rooms were pretty good at being sound proof.

You are next door to Nordstrom's Rack, H&M, Old Navy, Macy's and Walgreens. Magnolia Bakery is just up the street - very delicious buttercream cupcakes! The Magnificient Mile is nearby. We walked it every day, up and down, back and forth. So much shopping nearby, we didn't hit even half the stores.

Also very close to 2 entrances of the Blue Line - the train that rides directly to O'Hare airport. It took us about 40 minutes to get to the airport. It was maybe a 5 minute walk with our luggage, if it was even that long. We hopped on the Washington Street. There's also an entrance for the Red Line nearby but we had no need to use it.

If you enjoy history you will love this hotel. Hotel Burnham is located in the former Reliance Building. By the elevators on the wall are pictures and the history of the hotel. Very interesting. Anyone read "Devil in the White City" by Erik Larrson? The Architect Daniel Burnham and John Root (& Charles Atwood) of Burnham and Root that built Chicago's World Fair is the same of this Hotel.

All in all I would stay here again. It was a bit on the pricey side but it was a very nice hotel, very clean and in a great location. The only reason not to stay here would be that I'd want to try another hotel but I would definitely recommend this one.

From the moment I arrived I have felt welcome. Every staff member I have had contact woth have been kind, polite, helpful and personable. The room is clean and super comfortable. Room 1508 has a great view. I could sit on the chase in the bay window for hours and watch the goings on. If you are lonely they will bring you a beta fish in a bowel or you can meet other travelers at the free wine hour every evening from 5 to 6pm. You will not be sorry you stayed here.

The former Reliance Building, an iconic early skyscraper, has been renovated as the Hotel Burnham. If you love historic reuse, this is a top notch project. Many of the building's original details remain, such as an iron interior staircase, the mosaic floors, the original office doors, etc. The rooms are the usual chic Kimpton decor, customized for the building's era. Excellent restaurant, although the menu is limited. But there is all of Chicago out the door so that wasn't a problem. Very nice staff, especially Darnell at the front desk. The only negative is the rooms are smallish, because of the vintage of the building. Very well done within the space, but if a lot of room to spread out is important, book at least the King size room.

Room Tip: Ask for high flow away from the elevator & larger room

The Burnham is an exceptional hotel experience. From the moment you see it, you know the place is unique, warm and welcoming. The location can't be beat, the rooms are spacious and well appointed; you could easily stay inside your entire trip. The Atwood Cafe gets better each time you go there. The complimentary wine hour is a very nice way to get to know other guests.

The real key to the Burnham however, is the outstanding team of people working there. On this trip, I got to spend time with Emil, Darnell, Kelsey, Terrell and Vane. Each of them are extremely professional, gracious, and clearly proud to be part of Team Burnham!

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view of Washington or State Streets--but really, any of them are worthwhile...

This historic boutique hotel is a must stay in the Loop if you love Chicago! The history of this fine property is amazing but the staff is what sets this place apart. It may be off my Bucket List but I am glad - it is time to go back already.

Pro: location, wonderful hand written notes, quality finishes, housekeeping team, the entire hotel staff was out of this world. This is the way a fine hotel should be run - you are not the forgotten guest anymore.

Con: HVAC and bathroom were a little tired

Inspired: Suze a Guest Service Agent emailed us before our visit to make us feel at home and Beth in the Atwood Cafe - she was exceptional

Room Tip: pay the extra to get on the Historic Floors
