“great location but noisy”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

My husband and I took a quick pre-Christmas trip to Chicago, and the location for this Hilton Garden Inn couldn't be beat. We were just off the Magnificent Mile within walking distance of shopping, great restaurants, the Art Institute, Eataly, and the Chicago Christmas Market. The red-line el train stop (Grand station) was right at the hotel, so we could get around easily to other places.

The rooms themselves were standard and not bad--but nothing special. Sleep quality was a bit of an issue because we could hear every bit of hallway noise enter the room, even when people weren't trying to be loud. We covered the bottom of the doorway with a towel, and still we heard every conversation and every door slamming. I don't know what can be done to remedy the problem, but we would really reconsider staying here again just for that very issue.

Service was good, and the room rate was decent, especially since we booked a rate that included parking, which would have been super expensive otherwise. The pool and hot tub were small and well-used, but we enjoyed them.

This hotel is going through a remodel, and I really hope it can be upgraded to be more comfortable and quiet in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. Our location to the many area attractions you highlighted is a great perk, especially this time of year! The issue you mentioned regarding hallway noise is an ongoing challenge that we are always looking to improve. As you mentioned, we are undergoing a remodel and hope some of the steps we are taking during this process will also help with noise reduction. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Perfect location, especially if you arrive via 'L'; a Red line stop (underground) is steps from the lobby. Our bed was very comfortable, Starbucks kiosk and free daily newspaper in the lobby. Room was exceptionally clean if a bit worn. We set the controllable thermostat to "off" and our room was warm enough with no fan cycling noise. You can hear all the noise from the hall however. Plenty of hangers in the closet, individual coffee service was also available in the room. Front desk staff were friendly and professional. There are lots of restaurants in the surrounding area and a grocery store just north on State Street. This was an excellent mid-price hotel option. Would stay again if the price was right.

Room Tip: Avoid the12th floor if you are chlorine sensitive.

This hotel was perfect walking distance to everything shopping, bars and restaurants. Had very nice time with my girlfriends. Great for Romance or just a girls weekend of shopping. Great value and great service. #1 recommendation for Chicago. ....

This was my second visit to this hotel. The location is great, walking distance to everything we wanted to see, convenient to the Magnificent Mile, the House of Blues, Institute of Art, etc. Price is very reasonable. and the staff are excellent, very willing to accommodate with early check-in and assistance with recommendations for food and shopping. My only complaint was the lack of soundproofing - guests in hallway are easily heard from inside the rooms, even though they were speaking in normal tones.

Room Tip: Try for a room on a higher floor, less traffic noise and a nice view

I stayed for a couple days before Thanksgiving, and left Thanksgiving morning. The Staff was very nice and accomodating to the best of their ability. The parking fees are really too much for Valet though. $55 a day? Come on. I found that having to Navigate around the floors a bit much. I'm not a fan of the hotel layout. 1st, if you've never been there, it's really hard to find. There's a couple "Hilton" brand hotels in the area. 2nd, you take an elevator to the Lobby/check in, then walk a few hundred feet to another elevator to your floor. They had an escalator that you could access to the downstairs if you just want to go out, but it was broken and down the whole time I was there. The Breakfast is excellent, Thank you guys! I did enjoy the selections. There is a grocery store across the street if you need things which is nice to have. Thanksgiving Morning it was really crowded for the egg/omelet station, but that's par for the course. Busy day for all. When I received my bill, they charged me $20 more per night than the Hilton Honors member price I was quoted. I contacted them, and they apologized and refunded my costs though. I would prefer to stay at Hampton Inn & Suites on West Illinois. Just my humble opinion.

Room Tip: Just be prepared to use 2 elevators to get in and out all the time. There's a grocery store acro...

Stayed here last weekend and had a very nice visit. The location is unbeatable and we were able to walk to everything we wanted to see downtown. From my knowledge, the hotel was sold out but we had a very short wait to check in. The room was comfy and clean. I never understand why, but no HGI's ever seem to have a fan in the bathroom! Valet and front desk had great customer service. Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is right in the middle of the River North area so really convenient to great restaurants and shopping. Only complaint - parking is expensive $45 a night. Wish the hotel would offer some sort of discount.

Thank you for sharing your comments with us regarding your recent stay experience with us. We share your frustrating with the rising parking fees, which as of this summer just went higher due to new taxes levied by the city. We agree that parking rates are high, but please note that our parking is managed by an outside 3rd party, like most hotels, so rates are determined in partnership with them. We are glad that you enjoyed our central location and look forward to welcoming you back again soon!
