“Great Location”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights while in Chicago. The location is great. A couple blocks from the magnificent mile shops. Subway stop right outside hotel takes you right to cellular field to see the white sox play. Lots of great restaurants close to the hotel including the famous pizzeria uno. Free shuttle to navy pier is close by. Easy walk to John Hancock Observatory. The hotel was close to everything we wanted to do.

The room was big and clean. We had the king room with a play pen and we had lots of room. The pool and hot tub were nice. We were on the 16th floor and had a great view. Check in was fast and staff were helpful.

It was $40 from the airport to the hotel with the shuttle.

We really enjoyed our stay in the hotel and in Chicago. We would recommend the hotel and would stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel - the location downtown is perfect. Rooms were comfy but furnishings a little dated. It was very convenient having a fridge in the room. The pool area is tiny and was very crowded, but still enjoyable. We found the air in the pool area to be stale - we all started coughing as soon as we entered the room, but there were sliding glass doors to let in fresh air. Our only complaint was the noise from outside - sirens from ambulances/police every few minutes at night time - but this is outside of the hotel's control. Perhaps choosing a room on the eastern side of the hotel would reduce the noise from this. However, any sounds from the hallways seem to be amplified into our room. Some noisy revelers were hanging out in the hallway at 1am - a neighbor asked them to quiet down before I could call down to the front desk, but even the sound of room service being delivered down the hall could be heard in our room at 10:30pm. Perhaps the hotel could investigate some sound dampening measures for the hallway.

Hotel staff were excellent from check in to checkout.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side may be quieter from outdoor noise, but all rooms are susceptible to hallway n...

Thank you for your recent comments regarding your stay experience with us. While I was pleased to hear that you enjoyed our hotel amenities and staff, I wanted to make sure you were aware of some measures we will be taking to address some concerns you highlighted. With regards to the "dated" feel of the guestroom, we agree and will be doing a full renovation towards the end of this year that will include a complete update of each guestroom and bedding. In addition, we understand that during times of peak use our pool/spa area can be a little stuffy, so we are including a complete ventilation upgrade to that area of the hotel as part of our complete fitness center over hall. Lastly, with regards to noise, the sirens on State Street pose a challenge for all of us (believe me!) but we are experimenting with some noise reducing options inside each guestroom to help limit the sound level both external and internal, including adding additional security staffing during the overnight hours to limit our more "lively" guests from intruding on those around them. Thank you again for taking the time to share your comments and allowing me to provide some exciting updates. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again the next time Chicago is part of your travel plans!

The Hilton Garden Inn is well situated on Grand Avenue and just a block west of Michigan Ave. Navy Pier is due east while shopping and dining are all within walking distance. The hotel is clean and quiet and staff is cordial. Considering the going rate for a hotel in the city, the price was acceptable. We were allowed a delayed check out and also checked our luggage while we continued to prowl around the city.

I recently stayed for a conference. everything is close by. the staff is excellent! They are professional, polite, knowledgeable and helpful. There was a repaving project a block away causing traffice to be a bit of a mess and I needed a cab to O'Hare. One of the parking attendants went above and beyond to get a car for me, going almost around the block. Room service was very good. I received exactly what I ordered well within the time frame I was given. Rooms are very clean and certainly adequate for a short stay. Breakfast in the attached Weber Grill was poor. The buffet breakfast is not included in the price of the room, but is the equivalent of anything I have had at less costly hotels where is was included. Overall, a nice place to stay with lots of shopping and good restaurants within walking distance.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay experiences here with us. I will certainly share your positive comments with the members of our housekeeping team! It is disappointing to hear that Weber Grill has not lived up to your expectations however. While this is not our hotel's restaurant, being attached to them we share a partnership that effects both parties. I will make them aware of your feedback so they can continue their goal to improve across all meal periods so that every guest freely recommends them. Thank you again for your feedback and we hope that we continue to be your regular choice of hotel's while in town.

Great location in the center of the city. Many wonderful restaurants within one block! I didn't use many of the amenities like the pool, fitness center, or business center but it was perfect for a one night business trip.

My husband and I recently stayed at the HGI in downtown Chicago for a week. Conveniently located at the corner of Grand and State, the red line is literally outside the front door, along with taxis, shuttles, buses, and dozens of restaurants within a five-block radius. Excellent location!

We had the pleasure of meeting “Aya” at the front desk upon our arrival. In spite of arriving at 11:30 AM local time, she had a room ready for us (it was a Tuesday). We were ready to check our luggage in to storage for the day; this was an unexpected, but very pleasant surprise. Thank you! She also took the time to give us dinner and attraction suggestions, note locations on a map, and ask if we needed anything further. Professional, courteous, and very friendly. When she learned of our reason for visiting, an anniversary, she even added a nice extra touch. Thank you, Aya. 

Contrary to the helpful front desk staff, the HGI bellmen did absolutely nothing to assist us during our week-long stay. When we arrived by executive SUV (read: large, conspicuous vehicle) on a Tuesday morning (read: not busy in the lobby/car area), we waited for a bellman to assist us. No one. We waited a minute more and realized no one was coming to assist. We carried our own bags inside and met Aya (see above). During our six days, we entered and exited the hotel more than 20 times, either on foot or often, by taxi, and were never once greeted by bellmen. Ironically, on our last day at the hotel – as we returned with two empty carry-on suitcases we had just purchased for our return home – a bellman approached my husband and asked if he could assist. Really?

Housekeeping was always on stand-by, ready to provide whatever we needed. They'd stop us in the hall as we came and went, to see if we needed anything (as we don't usually request service during a stay). They'd call us each day to check, if they missed us in the hallway. And, when we would call to request something, they were at our door within five minutes. Excellent service... thank you!

Rooms: We were very lucky to have a corner room on the 21st floor, with amazing views to the west and north…. Fantastic! I’d recommend asking for a corner room, if available. The room itself was average, at best. We stay in Hilton properties, so it’s easy for us to make comparisons. The finishes were average, the carpet was dirty, and like nearly all Hilton properties in which we’ve stayed, there is no fan ventilation in the bathroom, making the room quite humid after showers. In hot July, this was very noticeable. The hotel has ‘number dial beds’ so you can adjust yours to your comfort level. Ours was broken. On the upside: the room had a small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, along with a large closet, which was good, because drawer space was minimal.

The Weber Grill is the hotel restaurant – overpriced and underwhelming, at best. Staff tried to accommodate, but missed the mark more than once during the one day we needed a quick breakfast and stopped in for theirs. Dinner service was a bit better, but overpriced. Points for our waitress getting us in/out quickly to make our Saturday evening show, after upselling everything she possibly could.

Breakfast suggestion: A few blocks over (on Onatrio Street) is Eggsperience. FANTASTIC breakfast – and patronized by visitors and locals, alike. We ate here three or four mornings during our stay. It averaged $30 each visit for the two of us – for coffee, an egg or french toast plate. Most everything is pricey in downtown Chicago!!

Forgot your hand lotion or need milk and fruit for your room? There is an Osco right across the street from the hotel, open 6 AM – midnight, seven days/week. Very convenient! They have all the usual ‘grocery store/market’ items, plus a wine section, drugstore items (toiletries), a deli, and a hot foods/cold foods section (soups, salads, rotisserie chicken, etc…) for quick grab-n-go. They also had adorable cupcakes… didn’t try them, but SO cute.

Runners, walkers, sports enthusiasts, athletes: There is a 7-story Sports Authority about four blocks from the hotel. Very handy for those items you forgot, or just want extra!!

We’d definitely stay at this hotel again. With its convenient location, indoor pool, gym, business center, and conference rooms (12th floor), stunning views, free wifi, efficient front desk and housekeeping staff, and Starbucks coffee in the lobby (limited service), with a FULL Starbucks on the next block, the Hilton Garden Inn on Grand/State is a great choice when visiting downtown Chicago!

Oh, and definitely get to the Quartino restaurant just two streets away (reviewed on TA)…. fabulous and within walking distance, which is great if you happen to have a ‘little’ too much Sangria…

Are you a shopper? Magnificent Mile is a few blocks away, Nordstrom (largest one in the U.S?) is one block over, and there is lots of shopping on State Street, just a short walk (or ride on the red line) from the hotel. There's even a "City Target" on State: two stories in a beautiful turn-of-the-century building... awesome!! And yes, fellow Target shoppers, they have a Dollar Spot. :)

Special thanks to "Violet" at the front desk, who helped us the last night we were in Chicago...we appreciated the information you provided!

Room Tip: Corner rooms on higher floors, stunning views!

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback regarding your recent week long stay with us. I appreciated hearing your direct and candid feedback. I will personally make sure that both Aya and Violet are recognized for their efforts and hear your comments. They will be most appreciative! Your comments regarding the bell service (or lack there of) was concerning and will be addressed. We need to ensure that our guest's arrival and departure experience meets/exceeds expectation, and clearly we dropped the ball here so I apologize. The bedding as I'm sure you've heard by now is going to be replaced this year. This should solve all adjustment and comfort concerns. Again, thank you for sharing such detailed and candid feedback. This is how we learn, so its appreciated! We look forward to seeing you back with us again in the very near future.
