“What a treasure!”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

Before I retired from education, I planned student friendly trips to various places in the Chicagoland area. One of the treasures that I discovered was the Oriental Institute which is on the campus of the University of Chicago. The artifacts in this museum are spellbinding. And you will be so surprised at the bounty of artifacts this museum has. While this is a smaller museum than the Museum of Science and Industry, it also means fewer people. I have enjoyed this museum many times and had fewer people to contend with. Additionally, while you are on campus why not stop by Rockefeller Chapel and perhaps Jane Addams Hull House. Both are within a short distance and well worth seeing. Historically, this could be a treasure of a day for you.

“Superb collection”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

The Oriental Institute focuses on the ancient histories of Egypt, Iran, Mesopotamia, and the eastern Mediterranean. The exhibits are wonderful, telling a story about these rich and cultured early civilizations and the development of writing, technology, trade, and crafts. It's in Hyde Park on the University of Chicago campus, which is also worth a visit.

“Near East par Excellence”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

Previously visited the OI many times as a student, but seldom toured it. Now, whenever on campus, I try to duck in for a quick visit. So much of Western culture began where the exhibits cover. When people began writing, these were the items they used, when cities first evolved, these things are gathered. When urban renewal was first contemplated, it's here. Words of wisdom from the ages are all here. Thought provoking is the phrase. In Brested Hall I've heard scores of discussions by some of the greatest leaders of the world. A nice contrast in one building.

“Off the beaten path”

I was blown away by the amount of artifacts in this museum. The quality of the pieces are amazing and the history of the involvement of the University of Chicago in Archeology is incredible. Don't miss this one.
