Owner description: The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) is a nonprofit cultural organization with tours, exhibitions, programs and events for all ages. Visit CAF on Michigan Avenue to view our 1,000-building scale model of Chicago, shop in our award-winning store, or participate in a fun LEGO® building event in our ArcelorMittal Design Studio. Choose from 85 tours by boat, walking, bus, or even L train, including the CAF River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady Cruises. Tours depart daily and are led by CAF's expert docent guides. Every October, check out CAF's free annual Open House Chicago festival. Proceeds from CAF’s tours and gift shop, as well as grants, sponsorships and donations, support this educational mission.

I had one and a half day left in the city after a business trip at the end of October and selected the Chicago Architecture Foundation for several tours: the River Tour and two walking tours (Art Deco and Treasures of the Loop).
The guides (all volunteers) are very knowledgeable and the programs very interesting. The combination of river tour and 2h walking tours is great, you can go further than the loop with the boat and walk into buildings as well.
They offer a very wide variety of tours (around 70 I think) so I highly recommend them.

We did two tours - the Frank Lloyd Wright tour of Oak Park and the downtown architecture via the L tour. Both were really interesting. The Oak Park tour took in the FLW home and studio as well as a walk around the neighbourhood looking at the outsides of other homes and then a tour through Unity Temple. The L tour took us on the L around the Loop - we looked at the architecture of the L stations themselves, some of their history, and the buildings we could see from the L stops. It's a different perspective, seeing things from 2 stories above ground. Unfortunately the sound assist devices weren't working well for some of us, but it wasn't a big deal.

We stopped by hoping to take a tour, but unfortunately none of the times worked out for a very short time in Chicago. However, the gift shop is very nice and there is a model display of Chicago that is worth stopping by to see. Hope we can take a tour next time, they sound interesting!

What a treat to peak behind the scenes into the daily lives of area architecture firms and into the recesses of some of the great Chicago buildings. If you get the chance ARUP in the Jeweler's Building is amazing... their Sound Studio is impressive. Only offered once a year Open House Chicago is one of the CAF's best events and that is saying a lot as the organization itself is impressive in its ability to deliver quality tours.

We did two of the CAF tours -- the River Architectural Cruise and the Frank Lloyd Wright bus tour. Both were great. Tour guides were very knowledgable and helpful to recommend nearby restaurants, bus stop location, etc. River Cruise gives you a totally different perspective of Chicago's great architectural styles. FLW tour takes you to Oak Park, tours his home/studio, tours neighborhood and points out homes designed by Wright, then ends as the Unitarian Church that Lloyd designed.

Both tours are best done in good weather, though the cruise has inside seating.

Both tours were well worth the money!
