Enjoyed our visit here. It's quite mixed - some exhibits obviously aimed at children and some suitable for adults who may have some prior astronomy knowledge. The shows are fun. We were left hungry as although they state that lunch is available until 2pm, when we went to the cafe at 1.50 they had already closed the kitchen which was frustrating.

It may not get the press or the adulation of some other Chicago museums (Shedd, Field, Science and Industry), but the Alder is a great museum in a wonderful location. We've been members for years. Last night, I took my six year old son for an "astro overnight" - sleeping in the museum and enjoying all it has to offer in the process. The "Planet XPlorers" exhibit is wonderful for small children, while the various sky shows, demos, and exhibits offered plenty to keep our first-grader engaged. Definitely worth a visit while in Chicago!

Visited Chicago in October 13. Went to the planetarium without knowing what we could see there. Different 2D / 3D shows in sphere using projectors...
Recommended for children.

Our family visited over Fall Break. I vaguely remember visiting here as a child, but couldn't remember anything about the Planetarium. After this visit I remember why...it's just pretty average. We enjoyed the solar system display then went downstairs to the other displays and were immediately lost in a poorly laid out facility. The staff was there more to be security than to engage their guests. The only time I saw any of the staff interacting with the guests about the planetarium was during a hands on exhibition...otherwise they seemed to be more like security...just uninterested observers.
Their cafeteria has a spectacular view of the lake with several telescopes available for viewing and identifying the Chicago skyscrapers.
We spent a few hours here and were ready to move on.
Note: Free admission with your ASTC passport.

Thanks to the Chicago pass we went to the Planetarium, really fascinating thinks you can find there. I liked a lot our visit there. The access through public transportation is really easy.
