Owner description: The Robie House on the University of Chicago campus is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of American architecture. It was created by Frank Lloyd Wright for his client Frederick C. Robie, a forward-thinking businessman. Designed in Wright's Oak Park studio in 1908 and completed in 1910, the building is both a masterpiece of the Prairie style and renowned as a forerunner of modernism in architecture. Tours of the site offer both a first-hand experience of its amazingly contemporary spaces and the current restoration work that is returning the house to its original appearance. Public tours are available Thursday - Monday. The museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Social events and family programs are hosted on weekends throughout the year. Robie House is also available for facility rentals and special events. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust website to learn more.

Really between 3 and 4 stars. An 'important' building, with many FLW hallmarks, this is a work in progress. The exterior is done, property stabilized, but interior not so much. If you cab from the Loop, this is expensive. Public transit is available, but you will walk (an express bus is a 20 minute walk). Still, you can stroll around UIC neighborhood which is pleasant enough - but not really touristy. There is the Smart Museum nearby to round out a morning - follow directions; it does not jump out at you. Visitor holding tank / video not finished, tour felt as though the guide was just tired, and questions made him more so. 5 interior spaces only.

He even thought so! On the University grounds. They had started restoration when we were there in 2000 and are now pretty much completed. Docent-led tour starts with a very good video to give you an overview. No photography inside, a bit of a disappointment but not something we haven't encountered in other attractions, including other Wright houses. We took transit, a bit of an adventure getting there, but glad we did because parking was basically non-existent ... it was Summer Convocation at the U. A lot of folks think a restoration should return a building to 'as new' condition. I'm an architect and I don't agree ... I believe a restoration should allow a building to show its 'experience' ... that patina that only age can create. This is a very good restoration displaying that approach. Excellent ... and we'll do it again on some future trip. Great photography opportunities outside the house.

The Robie House is another FLW gem.
The tour is very informative and the surrounding area is also nice.
We would also suggest, when in the Chicagoland area that you make the trip to Oak Park to visit the many Wright attractions there.

We highly recommend the tour of Robie House, which is adjacent to the University of Chicago and across from the Rockefeller Chapel. The tour guide is excellent. We booked our tour in advance and were impressed by how efficiently the staff move more than one group concurrently through the property. The gift shop also has a nice selection of books and memorabelia.

The cost of the tour is $15. The interior tour took about 1 hour. It was well worth it. The house is not as well-preserved as the Home & Studio in Oak Park (there is less original and replica furniture) but the tour was interesting and well worth the visit. Parking was really tough on the day we went!
