“Go for the Sunday night Uptown Poetry Slam”
Reviewed July 13, 2013 via mobile

Yeah, yeah, the music is great, but the Green Mill has hosted the Poetry Slam for the past 27 years. This is the original slam that now can be found all over the world. As a regular, I find it's one of the best entertainment bargains in the city. If you grew up hating poetry, you'll enjoy this.

“Historic club, lots of people, fabulous music”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

Django Reinhart may be gone, but his spirit lives with the group we saw at The Green Mill. First hour was standing up at the bar, but only cost 6 bucks to get in. Then we sat in a booth for the last set. Alfonso Ponticelli led the musical proceedings, and we could've enjoyed another couple of sets. I'm always pleased with my visit to The Green Mill. It's a landmark that deserves to last forever.

“Arrive early! Limited prime seating!”
Reviewed June 8, 2013 via mobile

We arrived early enough, so we thought. Unfortunately, we were a little too late to get a good seat to view the band and fun dancing. We sat near the bar area instead. Overall, the atmosphere was very fun, band was fantastic, and the service was great! Our server checked on us frequently. Since the building is quite old, the smell is old as well. Would recommend to go check it out for the ambience and entertainment!

“Green Mill -- the real deal”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We visited the Green Mill on a Thursday night for the swing music. Loved seeing the diverse ages in the crowd and the dancing couples. The show seemed very authentic down to the announcements between the numbers. The place was jam-packed -- your best bet to see when you're short like me is to sit at the bar. From the retro ambiance to the music, dancing, and people-watching, it was a 360-degree experience. Bartender was great, and the cover and drinks seemed like a bargain compared to most other places we'd been frequenting. This was one of the highlights of our Chicago trip -- fun!

“Chicago gem on downward spiral - very disappointing!”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

I used to LOVE this place, I mean I would happily sit through 2 sets with friends and hang out til the early hours. Returned last night (Saturday); $12 entrance - OK, instructed by door man not to talk, use flash photography, silence cell phone, sit down and shut up, don't breathe, don't talk to your friends, don't show enjoyment of any kind, tip the barman for sour service if you want to get a second drink without waiting an age, do not on any account laugh out loud - you will be thrown out! Shush, shush, shush all the way home!

GIVE ME A BREAK! Do not take my money at the door and then treat me like a nuisance, you are not the culture police - you are a jazz club with a bar! Get over it and treat your patrons properly. We pay our way, show us some hospitality - shame on you for turning one of Chicago's cultural landmarks into a cultural abyss - very poor indeed!
