We were told we'd enjoy the Art Institute even though we're not that into art. Wrong! Though there were some beautiful pieces, we'd just as soon look at them in a book that provided some background information. And the modern art was a joke. The story of the Emperor's New Clothes came to mind a we overheard patrons expound on a totally white white canvas, a totally blue canvas, a canvas of symmetrical stripes, and it only got worse. The photography section had an area that was pure porn. We did enjoy the miniatures section--it was like touring period homes without all the walking. The layout of the building was very confusing, the map was very difficult to decipher, and the many employees scattered throughout acted as if giving directions was beneath them.

If you are planning to go to Chicago, don't miss this excellent special exposition. There is a very good explanation of a very defined period of painting from about 4 years in this painter's life, showing how he evoluted from one stage to another during pre World War I years. Auto guides are available for 5 US$.

along with the d'orsay in paris, the van gogh in amsterdam and the moma in new york this is my favorite art museum in the world.
the collection of impressionist and early twentieth century art is monumental and certainly my favorite part of the collection.
the new modern wing is beautiful, houses some wonderful cubist, expressionist and modern works (even though i'm not terribly keen on the contemporary art) and the architecture and the views it affords of grant park, the guggenheim bandshell and the chicago skyline are spectacular.
temporary exhibits are frequent and often world class, there's always a reason to return even if you've been here many times before.
both of the sit down restaurants, the garden cafe (in the original building) and terzo piano (in the modern addition) are very good. on sunny days both offer outdoor seating, making it well worth lingering.
to visit chicago and not spend a few hours at the art institute would be a crime.

This is probably one of the best Art Museums I've ever been to. Central, located in 111 South Michigan Avenue. Also proved good arrangements of the collections and an excellent large Museumm Shop as well. This is absolut a Museum I'd like to visit once again. Very nice collection. I especially liked the American Art section and the African Art section. Highly recommended.
