Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. At today's Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it's still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff's wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's "tradition with a twist!" Private Dining provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Host your next event in one of our four private rooms. “A little bit of Germany in the Windy City”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Attended a business dinner here with a fixed menu of four entrée choices. The food was good. One of the managers gave a short history of the restaurant, a family owned concern.

“Nothing spectacular; just so-so.”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

I was not overly impressed by this place, nor was I particularly disappointed. It was a half decent meal, and a decent price. Nothing outstanding, but not bad either. The beer was pretty good, but that's to be expected for a German beer hall. I've been to a few Hofbrauhaus type places, the one in Pittsburgh for example, and it was far superior. I think the food might not have actually been that different but the general feel of the Berghoff made it seem like a geriatric version of a fun Hofbrauhaus. That's it I think, the atmosphere was just so.....depressing. It stands out more in my mind than does the quality of the meal. We went on a Friday night, primetime, so the place should have been vibrant and alive but it felt more like a mass service than a beer hall.

“Berghoff's still "has it"”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

If you like an old country German meal it is hard to beat Berghoff's in the Chicago loop. Started going to Berghoff's 50 years ago---and the sausages and German potato salad are still the best. AND it is easy on the wallet, too.

“Great Experience!”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

Although we’re hardly connoisseurs of German food, we found the fare served at the The Berghoff to be excellent.

Both the service and the food were very good. However, the most attractive aspect of the experience was learning the history behind the restaurant. The business opened in 1898, survived (and thrived) during prohibition, and remains a fully functioning Chicago landmark to this day. Interestingly, the Berghoff received the first liquor license in Illinois after the repeal of prohibition. This license—along with other historic information—is hanging on the wall of the restaurant.

Would highly recommend eating at this place. We’ll definitely return!

“Excellent Pre-matinee Stop”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

We stopped on the Saturday before Memorial Day, in the midst of the parade, and prior to our matinee of Book of Mormon. Hubby had the lamb burger, which was excellent. I had a salad that entailed mango and chicken - also very good. The beer was wonderful, but the service was a little slow. I loved the "German Beer Hall" feel of the place and would definitely recommend for lunch or a beer.
