Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. At today's Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it's still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff's wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's "tradition with a twist!" The Restaurant has character. It feels like you have stepped back in time. The staff are friendly. We didn't sit at the bar, but had to go up to the Bar to order our food. Classic items on the menu, try the Draft Rootbeer. The food was delicious, five people ate here. We all were pleased!!!

I went with a couple of friends, and we were not very hungry (having just come from a party) so we ordered beers, appetizers, and desserts. The in-house beers were delicious and smooth - even the amber and dark beers. We also ordered perogies, stuffed mushrooms, and pretzels with cheese apps to share. All of them came with four pieces and were delicious. I don't typically like cooked spinach, but the creamed spinach in the stuffed mushrooms was so smooth and creamy it was not a strong spinach flavor. Finally, we had to order the apple strudel dessert because that is what they are famous for (at least on Food Network). It was amazing. I also have to say that our server still gave us great, friendly service despite our limited food ordering.

A Saturday night visit, around 8 pm. Getting indoors this old institution of a restaurant here in Chicago, the history table in the entrance hall is a good place to learn some more of this legendary restaurant in Chicago.
When seated at our table, of choice, we immediately received home baked bread, and also the special hard bread flavored with herbs and hard cheese, -delicious.
Our waiter was very attentive and made the special favorite for my companions. Food was good, service excellent.

we have been to this establishment before and both times there were many local business people getting lunch at the cafe in the basement. we opted to sit down for lunch in the restaurant. it is a landmark and the interior speaks of it's storied past. the dark paneling and low lighting add to the charm. the food does not. the goulash soup was satisfactory. there were big chunks of meat and some nice dumpling style noodles, and it was hot. my husband had the reuben sandwich with which he was satisfied. it was a good quality sandwich, but not the best he's tasted. i had the hamburger which was not good at all. it was a frozen patty though it was cooked to my specification. the pickle was good as were the toppings of bacon and cheese. service was swift and impersonal despite someone asking how everything is too many times. overall, not an unpleasant experience, just not a great one, esp for the price.

The interior of the restaurant is beautiful - sit at the bar and admire the room and surroundings. The food is outstanding and the creamed spinach is a must have. They rye bread is awesome. Lots of good beer to choose from. Just a place you need to go to and you'll keep going back. Large portions, great service and a Chicago icon
